The No. 12 ranked Luther College Wrestling team improved to 5-1 after posting wins over Waynesburg (PA), No. 3 Messiah (PA) and Elmhurst today at the Gator "Boots" Duals. Luther hosted today's eight team duals at McGavock High School in Nashville, Tennessee. The Norse added an exhibition win over the University of Central Florida club team 40-6 to cap off the afternoon.
The Norse opened the day with a 26-7 win over Waynesburg College, highlighted by major decision victories by No. 6 ranked Evan Obert at 133 and No. 7 ranked Jayden DeVilbiss at 184.
In the second dual of the day, Luther defeated Messiah 28-7. The Norse grabbed the momentum at 125 with an overtime victory by Garrett Wangsness over No. 7 ranked Lucas Malmberg. Luther won eight of the 10 matches, including a come-from-behind fall by DeVilbiss to clinch the victory.
The Norse won nine matches in their final regular dual of the day defeating Elmhurst 37-3. Luther earned bonus points thanks to falls by Obert at 133, Garrett Bonte at 165 and DeVilbiss at 184. Nick Pearch added a major decision victory at 197.
Luther concluded the day by defeating the Central Florida club team 40-6. The Norse received falls from Obert at 133, Dakota Gray at 141, Cody Orr at 149, Eric Moreno at 174 and DeVilbiss at 184. Nick Scheffert earned a major decision at 125.
Because UCF is a club team the victory does not count towards Luther's overall record. The matches do not count towards an individuals season record as well.
Five Luther wrestlers went undefeated today. This group included Wangness at 125 (3-0), Obert at 133 (3-0), Blake Letney at 157 (3-0), Bonte at 165 (3-0), DeVilbiss at 184 (3-0) and Pearch at 197 (3-0).
The Norse have now won five consecutive dual meets and will return to action after the Christmas break at the Knox Duals in Galesburg, Ill., Saturday, Jan. 4.
