Luther won its season opener over visiting Macalester College 82-74 this evening in the Regents Center. The Norse led at halftime 35-28 and increased its lead to 57-37 with a little over three minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Scots battled back and pulled to within five points (79-74) with 24 ticks left on the clock. Free throws by Katie Waller and Anna Edel sealed the victory.
The Norse shot 44.8 percent from the field that included a 7-for-15 effort from behind the three-point line. Luther's bench also outscored the Macalester bench 26-4.
Claire Marburger, who was making her debut in a Norse uniform, led the team with 25 points. Katie Waller and Sarah Holtz also reached double digits with 11 points each. Marburger also led the team with seven rebounds, while Holtz was next with six.
Macalester was led by Regan Fruh led all scorers with 27. Tyana Loisselle tallied 17 and Vivi Gregorich was credited with 14.
Luther returns to action this Friday and Saturday when they will travel to Milwaukee, Wis., and play in the Paul F. Kneppel Classic. Wisconsin Lutheran is hosting the two-day event. The Norse will face Washington-St. Louis on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and DePauw University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
