The Luther women’s tennis team dropped its second straight match against a regionally ranked opponent to open the spring season, falling 8-1 to UW-La Crosse at the Winona Tennis Center in Winona, Minn.
The Norse fell behind in doubles for the first time all year, as the Eagles quickly tallied victories at the top two spots and then held on for a (9-7) victory at No. 3 doubles when Jenny Graham and Rachael Wabers defeated Luther’s Lauren Welch and Megan Wachholz.
Welch picked up Luther’s lone point of the day with a (7-6 (4), 6-2)) victory over Bry Blanton at No. 4 singles. Jenna Myers and Wachholz each won a set before falling in the deciding third set super tie-breaker. Myers lost (6-0, 3-6, (10-6)) to the Eagles’ Kimmy Mrozek while Wachholz dropped a (6-7 (4), 6-0, (11-9)) decision to Kendra Woyahn at No. 6. The Eagles won the remaining three matches in straight sets to seal the team victory.
The Norse are now 8-5 overall this season. The team returns to action on Sunday, March 23 against George Fox in Orlando, Fla. The match with George Fox will be the first of five for the Norse on the squad’s annual spring trip. Luther will also face Carthage, Hamline, Calvin, and Elmhurst.
