For the second year in a row the Luther College men's soccer team has advanced to the Elite 8 of the NCAA III National Soccer Tournament. Luther has now advanced to the Round of 8 four times (1996, 2001, 2018, 2019).
This afternoon, the Norse defeated by Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University at Ed Strand Field on the campus of North Park University. Following 110 minutes of scoreless action, the match was decided by shootout. The Norse prevailed 7-6.
Logan Morrison gave the Norse the 7-6 advantage and then keeper Carson Davenport stopped Drew Riggie on the final penalty kick of the the shootout to secure the win.
Davenport was solid all afternoon, turning away five shots on goal that included a point blank attempt late in the second overtime.
This was the second consecutive match the Norse have advanced in the tournament by shootout.
Luther will face Calvin University at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. Calvin advanced to the Elite 8 with a 1-0 double overtime victory over North Park. The winner of tomorrow's match will advance to the semifinals that will be held Dec. 6-7, at UNC-Greensboro Soccer Stadium, Greensboro, N.C.
