The 2017-18 campaign is in the books. Luther posted 37.5 points at the NCAA III Lower Midwest Regional and finished 10th from the field of 17 teams. Wartburg College won the team title with 181.5, followed by Loras College with 130 and Coe College with 97.
The top-three finishers in each weight class qualified for the NCAA III National Championships that will be held at the Cleveland Public Auditorium, Cleveland, Ohio March 9-10.
Unfortunately the for the Norse, they did not have a wrestler qualify for the national finale. Billy Poray (165) wrestled in the third place match but was defeated by Jeremy Vester of Central College 8-2.
The Norse have five wrestlers alive heading into day two of the NCAA Division III Lower Midwest Regional.
Kyle Clough (133) lost two consecutive matches on Sunday that ended his season. He was defeated by top-seed and nationally ranked No. 3 Brock Rathbun of Wartburg by major decision 17-3. Rathbun went on to win the regional title defeating Brendan Gould of Augustana-Rock Island 10-4 in the title match.
Connor Murphy (125) began Sunday in the consolation semifinals and was defeated in his first match 6-3 by Matt Randone of Loras College and was eliminated from the tournament.
Gilbert Valadez (149) also begsn Sunday in the consolation semifinals. He began the day defeating Central's Jordan Challen 6-1 and then lost by tech fall 16-1 to Brandon Birt of Millikin University who went on to finish third.
Hunter Weaver (197) faced Tyler Vittal of North Central and was eliminated from the tournament dropping a 12-7 decision.
