In a battle for second place in the Iowa Conference standings, Central College edged Luther 23-21 this afternoon in Carlson Stadium.
Luther led 7-3 at the halftime break and the teams combined for 21 points in the first 5:44 of the second half. Central took a 17-14 lead with 9:16 left in the third. Early in the fourth quarter, Luther retook the lead on a Brady Letney nine-yard touchdown run the capped off a 68-yard, eight-play drive. Two drives later, Central took the lead for good on a 50-yard, seven play drive, ending in a Blaine Hawkins to Danny Groezinger on two-yard connection. The PAT was blocked making it 23-21 Central with 5:25 remaining.
Luther's final drive started on its own 23-yard line. The Norse converted on three fourth downs during the drive, including a deflected pass by a Central defender that ended in the hands of Justin Montgomery on the Dutch 20-yard line. Three plays later, the Norse setup for a 21-yard field attempt that was missed wide right, securing the victory for the Dutch.
Letney led the Norse with 200 yards of total offense. He rushed for 107 yards and one touchdown and threw for 93yards. Anthony Hollingshed had 99 yards and his first career touchdown. Nick Slavens also added 81 yards. Justin Montgomery caught seven passes for 89 yards.
The Norse defense held the Dutch to 12 points below their scoring average and 123 yards below their total offense per game average.
Dante Joseph tallied nine tackles that included one-and-half tackles for loss. Patrick Beatty and Isaac Highum were next with eight stops each.
The loss gives Luther an Iowa Conference record of 4-3, 5-4 overall. Central improved to 5-2 in the IIAC, 6-3 overall.
Luther will wrap up the 2017 campaign at Loras College one week from today. Kick-off will take place in the Rock Bowl at 1:00 p.m.
