Luther lost a hard-fought 63-61 decision to University of Puget Sound this afternoon in the first of two games for the Norse at the Surf's Up Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Trailing by as many as 12 points early in the first half, the Norse battled back and were down 34-33 at halftime. A three-pointer by Cody Kliethermes at the start of the second frame gave the Norse their first lead of the a game (36-34), a lead that they would hold onto until the 6:20 mark, when two free throws by Erin Barber (59-58) gave the Loggers what proved to be their final lead of the game. In the final six minutes, the two teams combined for just seven points en route to the final score.
The difference in the game was points in the paint, where the Loggers outscored the Norse 28-8. The Loggers also won the battle of the boards 42-31. Neither team shot the ball particularly well as the Loggers connected on 39 percent and the Norse 40 percent.
Jake Martin led the Norse attack with a double-double producing 10 rebounds and 11 points. Nathan Meyer tallied 16 points and Kliethermes chipped in 12. Luke Wright added eight off the bench.
Today's outcome gives both teams an overall record of 2-2.
Luther will wrap up their trip to Hawaii tomorrow afternoon when they will play University of Pacific at 3:00 p.m. (PT).
