Luther won a hard fought 73-72 decision over host Loras College tonight in Dubuque. The win was the third in a row for the Norse who improved to 18-4.
In a game that had eight ties and nine lead changes, a three-point bucket by Anna Madrigal (72-71), followed by a free throw by Moran Lonning (73-71) in the final 2:52, gave the Norse the lead for good.
Lori Obendorf pulled the Duhawks to within one (73-72) with a free throw with 48 ticks left on the clock. The Duhawks had an opportunity to take the lead with 9.3 seconds remaining, but were called for a three second violation. Turnovers proved to be the difference in the game as Luther outscored Loras 17-7 off of turnovers. Loras had 21 on the night to Luther's seven.
Madrigal led all scorers with a career high 20 points. She did the majority of her damage from behind the arch connecting on 6-of-9 attempts. Lonning was next with 19, followed by Kylie Romeo with seven and Tayler Jenks with six.
Loras was led by Kaitlin Phillips with 17, Carly Goede with 14 and both Victoria May and Obendorf with nine each.
Both teams entered tonight's game already having made the six-team Iowa Conference Tournament field. The victory keeps Luther (8-3) one game behind league leaders University of Dubuque (9-2, 15-7) that defeated Simpson 69-66 tonight. Loras is now alone in fourth place with a mark of 7-4, 13-9 overall.
