No. 24 Luther lost a hard fought Iowa Conference showdown with Loras College by a score of 70-69. The Norse battled back from a 12-point deficit midway through the first half and thanks to three-point baskets by Moran Lonning and Ashley Tewes in the final minutes, pulled the Norse to within six (21-27) at the intermission.
In the second frame, Loras extended its lead to 11 (44-33) with a little over 11 minutes remaining. The Norse responded with a 36-24 run and took a one-point lead (69-68) thanks to a three-pointer by Kylie Romeo with 21 ticks left on the clock. The Duhawks Kaitlin Phillips, who led all scorers with 24 points, scored what proved to be the game winner with 8 seconds remaining.
Lonning, who played the majority of the second half with four fouls, led a trio of double digit scorers with 21. Meagan Koepnick and Anna Madrigal added 11 and 10 respectively. Romeo ended the afternoon with nine.
Following today's game, both teams have a record of 4-2 in league play. Luther's overall record is now 14-3 and Loras is 10-7.
The Norse will be on the road next week starting with a date at Buena Vista University on Wednesday, Jan. 28. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
