SUMMARY:Stations of the Resurrection Art Exhibit - CFL Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Beginning this week\, visit the second floor of the Center for Faith and Life to experience artist Scott Erickson’s “Stations of the Resurrection.” These 14 evocative images reflect the premise that resurrection changes the way you see everything\, and that through changed perspectives\, the world itself can be changed. \nEach one of the stations draws from the resurrection story and invites us into a change of perspective: one that affected the followers back then\, and one that invites the followers right now. The exhibit will run through spring finals week. Contact ministry@luther.edu for more information about the show\, and visit scottericksonart.com to learn more about the artist.

SUMMARY:Roslien Lecture: Dr. Michael Osterholm\, "Public Health in Crisis: What This Means to You"
DESCRIPTION:A Fireside Chat with Dr. Michael Osterholm\nModerated by Dr. Mark Larson\nThis event is co-sponsored by Minnesota Public Radio. \nThe national public health response to the COVID pandemic has been heavily criticized for the lack of a clearly defined strategy\, resulting in a lack of trust in public health by the general public. Now the Trump Administration’s national response to infectious diseases\, and vaccines in particular\, is no longer based on scientific evidence\, but rather ideology. Dr. Osterholm has occupied a front row seat for the deliberations and decisions for the pandemic response and the current federal actions regarding vaccines and public health. The current status of public health worldwide is in crisis and should be a serious concern for all of us. Dr. Osterholm will explain why this crisis exists and what we must do to address it. He will highlight the findings detailed in his 2025 book\, The Big One: How We Must Prepare for Future Deadly Pandemics. \nwatch via livestream \n\nAbout Dr. Osterholm\nDr. Michael Osterholm \nMichael Osterholm\, PhD\, MPH\, is Regents Professor\, McKnight Presidential Endowed Chair in Public Health\, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP)\, Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Division of Environmental Health Sciences\, School of Public Health\, a professor in the Technological Leadership Institute\, College of Science and Engineering\, and an adjunct professor in the Medical School\, all at the University of Minnesota. \nIn early 2025\, Dr. Osterholm and colleagues founded the Vaccine Integrity Project\, a key initiative dedicated to safeguarding vaccine use in the US. He is also author of the new book\, The Big One: How We Must Prepare for Future Deadly Pandemics. \nIn November 2020\, Dr. Osterholm was appointed to President-elect Joe Biden’s COVID-19 transition advisory board. From June 2018 through May 2019\, he served as a Science Envoy for Health Security on behalf of the US Department of State. He is also on the Luther College Board of Regents. \nHe is the author of two additional\, New York Times best-selling\, books. In 2000\, he authored Living Terrors: What America Needs to Know to Survive the Coming Bioterrorist Catastrophe\, laying out why the biological attacks (like the 2001 anthrax attack) are a new reality and what we must do to prepare. His 2017 book\, Deadliest Enemy: Our War Against Killer Germs\, details the most pressing infectious disease threats of our day (including coronaviruses and pandemics) but lays out a strategy to address them. \nIn addition\, Dr. Osterholm is a member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) and the Council of Foreign Relations. In June 2005\, Dr. Osterholm was appointed by Michael Leavitt\, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)\, to the newly established National Science Advisory Board on Biosecurity. In July 2008\, he was named to the University of Minnesota Academic Health Center’s Academy of Excellence in Health Research. In October 2008\, he was appointed to the World Economic Forum Working Group on Pandemics. In addition to his role at CIDRAP\, Dr. Osterholm has also served as an HHS special advisor and a representative on the interim management team to lead the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention. Previously\, Dr. Osterholm served from 1975 to 1999 at the Minnesota Department of Health\, the last 15 as state epidemiologist. \nHe has written more than 420 papers and abstracts\, including 21 book chapters\, and is a frequently invited guest lecturer on the topic of epidemiology of infectious diseases. He serves on the editorial boards of nine journals. \nDr. Osterholm has received numerous honors\, including an honorary doctorate from Luther College; the Pump Handle Award\, CSTE; the Charles C. Shepard Science Award\, CDC; the Harvey W. Wiley Medal\, FDA; the Squibb Award\, IDSA; Distinguished University Teaching Professor\, UMN; and the Wade Hampton Frost Leadership Award\, APHA. He also has been the recipient of six major research awards from the NIH and the CDC. Recently\, he was named to TIME’s 2026 TIME100 health list of the world’s 100 most influential leaders in health. \nAbout Dr. Larson\nDr. Mark Larson \nAfter graduating from Luther in 1978\, and medical school at the University of Iowa\, Dr. Mark Larson completed a residency in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Gastroenterology at Mayo Clinic. Since 1989\, he has been a Consultant in Gastroenterology at Mayo Clinic\, specializing in interventional endoscopy and malignant and pre-malignant gastrointestinal conditions and syndromes. He remains very engaged in medical research and educational activities\, and has also held a number of administrative positions\, currently serving as the Medical Director of Mayo Clinic Care Network\, which is a collection of domestic and international organizations that work collaboratively with Mayo Clinic. \n  \nAbout the Roslien Distinguished Lecture\nDr. David J. Roslien Distinguished Lecture in Science and Leadership aims to bring internationally recognized individuals who have made impacts on society through the use of cutting-edge science or global leadership in policy and programs to Luther College to engage with faculty and students.

DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year again! Join Reslife\, SAAC\, and Wellness on April 21 for the third annual Take Me Out to the Ball Game event! Both Baseball (vs. Wartburg) and Softball (vs. Loras) will be hosting doubleheaders that day. Cracker Jacks will be handed out during the 5th (softball) and 7th (baseball) innings.  Get your voices warmed up and ready to sing your best rendition of Take Me Out to the Ball Game during those innings as well. \nThere will also be a free-will donation bucket for the Decorah Unified Sports group and the ability to sign up for the Polar Plunge that is happening on May 14 at Decorah High School in honor of the unified sports group. \nYou don’t want to miss this! Bring your friends and energy down to the fields for a fun afternoon!

SUMMARY:"Embodying Indigenous Spirituality" Sihler Lecture
DESCRIPTION:As we care for Mother Earth and vice versa\, the feminine energy guides us to stewardship and spirituality with all our non-human relatives; embracing this energy will unlock for us a new way to engage with climate action decisively. This collaboration will invite students\, faculty\, and community members to explore how belief systems/cosmology\, cultural traditions\, and personal values shape our collective response to the climate crisis. \nWe will also highlight the vital role of Indigenous sovereignty\, examining how Indigenous spiritual worldviews\, land-based practices\, music as a sacred conduit between worlds\, and movements for self-determination offer essential guidance for climate justice and ecological restoration. By bringing together scientific understanding with deep moral\, cultural\, and spiritual reflections\, the event aims to cultivate a sense of shared responsibility and interconnection during a moment of global social\, ecological\, and spiritual degradation. \nThis keynote is featuring one of our nationally recognized Earth Guardians Speakers\, Tony Perez Soto\, whose activism\, lived experience\, and spiritual grounding illuminate new pathways for climate engagement.

SUMMARY:"Stories\, Systems\, Survival" Earth Day Panel
DESCRIPTION:How do we care for ourselves\, and each other\, in the face of climate change? This panel featuring Tony\, Tyler\, and Ploy explores the connections between mental health\, community care\, and climate justice in a time of overlapping global crises. \nJoin us for a conversation on collective care practices\, the power of storytelling to connect lived experiences with environmental realities\, and how systems like inequality and colonialism shape both the climate crisis and its emotional impacts. Panelists will also share practical tools to help students stay grounded\, resilient\, and engaged. \n\nTony Perez Soto – Tony is an Indigenous climate activist and scholar whose work centers decolonization\, migration\, and Indigenous sovereignty; his perspective will ground Luther’s exploration of spirituality and climate justice through lived cultural and ancestral knowledge.\nTyler Massias – Tyler is an environmental justice activist/organizer and Earth Guardians’ Speakers Bureau Director whose work in food sovereignty and regenerative agriculture reflects a spiritually rooted approach to community resilience. He also brings a scientific and policy-oriented perspective.\nPloy Kongkapetch – Ploy is a multicultural therapist and founder of Heartwork Psychotherapy\, where she supports activists and changemakers in navigating the emotional impact of climate and social justice work. Her approach centers grief\, anger\, hope\, and exhaustion as essential parts of caring deeply\, helping individuals build more sustainable relationships with themselves and the movements they are part of.

SUMMARY:Partisan Politics and Public Health: Lessons Learned with Vaccine Developer Dr. Thomas Verstraeten
DESCRIPTION:At a time in the United States when the field of public health is becoming increasingly more partisan\, what can we learn from other countries around the world to stabilize public trust in public health officials? Luther student\, Maci Doty ‘26\, is joined by Dr. Thomas Verstraeten to discuss the politics of public health\, specifically vaccinations\, in Europe. Dr. Verstraeten is the founder of a Belgium-based infectious disease and vaccine research company\, P95. Utilizing hubs around the world\, P95 works alongside the World Health Organization\, Pfizer\, and other global organizations to develop and research vaccines. Dr. Verstraeten brings a unique perspective to the conversation; straddling both private and public sectors in public health\, he is well-positioned to share insights that may benefit partisan states like the United States. Dr. Verstraeten and Ms. Doty will discuss political debates and topics that surround vaccination in Europe as compared to the US\, and the role of governments in shaping public opinion. \nThis discussion will take place over Zoom with a viewing in Hovde Lounge.

SUMMARY:Women's History Month Keynote: Shelley Buffalo: Rematriation and Indigenous Futurism
DESCRIPTION:Shelley Buffalo\, Decolonial Pathfinder\, is a food sovereignty\, rematriation and restorative justice advocate. Through collaborative partnerships and her consultancy\, Water Panther\, Shelley mindfully directs her labor to penetrate and transcend the colonial mindset. Through creative and compassionate solutions\, Shelley seeks a path forward to a livable\, equitable and biodiverse future on Earth. The story of Grandmother Spider who weaves the pattern of life on Earth teaches us the creative potential of making the pattern more beautiful than before as we hone our skills and vision informed by humility\, value and respect for life on Earth. Shelley calls on her ancestors to help her weave with Grandmother’s hands; with wisdom\, love and care for all of creation. \nShelley believes that the undoing of colonial structures is necessary for reweaving something more beautiful as is Grandmother Spider’s lesson for human life on earth. Each time we reweave the fabric of society\, we have the opportunity to make it more beautiful. \n

SUMMARY:AAPI Month Speaker - Mai Na Lee: “Subverting the Blood Sacrifice Narrative: How the Hmong Arrived in the Midwest and Became Targets of ICE Arrest and Deportation”
DESCRIPTION:The Hmong began arriving in large numbers into the Midwestern states in 1976 as refugees of the first and second Indochina Wars. For decades\, the first generation of Hmong elders awaited the return to their mountainous homes in Laos. Because they saw themselves as sojourners and not permanent immigrants\, many never prepared for obtaining citizenship for themselves or their children. This refusal for permanent resettlement complicated their lives and the lives of their children at multiple junctures of history. This talk provides the background for U.S. empire activities in Southeast Asia that displaced the Hmong into the United States with emphasis on their resettlement in the Midwest. It will also set the grounds for examining why the Hmong have become targets of the Trump administration’s ICE Arrest and Deportation efforts in Minnesota during the last year.

Based on Franz Schubert’s song cycle Die schöne Müllerin\, this production brings a poignant narrative to the stage. \nPairing with this tragedy is Gian Carlo Menotti’s comic opera\, The Old Maid and the Thief. This opera buffa offers a comedic narrative that invites the audience to form their own conclusions about morality\, as each character’s perspective remains open to interpretation.” \nIn the weeks leading up to the performance\, tickets will be available at tickets.luther.edu.
