Sigma Tau Delta is the international English honor society, and its purpose is to foster the discipline of English, including: creative and critical writing, promoting social relations among its members, providing opportunities for service, and exhibiting high standards of academic excellence.
The Alpha Beta Xi Chapter at Luther College was chartered in 1992, and initiations are held every spring. Andy Hageman, associate professor of English, serves as the chapter's sponsor.
Members must have a minimum grade point average of a B (3.00) in English courses, rank in the highest 35 percent of their class, and have completed at least three semesters and have six credit hours in English beyond Paideia I. Eligible students interested in membership may contact Andrew Hageman at any time. Membership incurs a small chapter dues fee and a one-time (larger) international chapter membership fee.
Most of the meetings and functions sponsored by the society are open to all interested students, regardless of their academic standing or major/minor. Sigma Tau Delta hosts lectures and receptions for visiting writers, as well as festive occasions for students and faculty; such as the English Department Christmas party.
As you can see by the photo, where students show mock seriousness in portraying the Sigma Tau Delta triangle, the group enjoys having fun together!
Sigma Tau Delta recognizes outstanding writing and scholarship with a range of awards each year. Several Chapter members have been awarded scholarships. Check out the opportunities on Sigma Tau Delta. Applications are due in the fall.
The 2018 Sigma Tau Delta International Convention will be in Cincinnati, Ohio, March 21-24. The Conference Theme is "Seeking Freedom"
