Orchesis is a student-led dance group at Luther College advised by faculty member Jane Hawley. Using Professor Hawley's curriculum, the group allows students the opportunity to continue dancing in a college setting. Not limited to one style of dance, Orchesis aims to encompass and promote a variety of dance backgrounds. Choreography for all dances is created by students.
Orchesis has faced new changes as a result of COVID-19 precautions but are still working to create art! Here is a quote from them about what they have been doing in these trying times:
"This semester has brought forward many challenges, but it was incredibly important for us to maintain our dance community. We are now dancing six feet apart with masks, a small sacrifice to be able to meet as a group. We have also had to change the format of our rehearsals since our usual choreography is not COVID-friendly, so we have taken the opportunity to work on short dances, try out different techniques, all taught by our wonderful members. Most importantly, we are making time to just be together and dance, and even though it looks a little different, the impact of our time together is exactly the same."
Orchesis performs at many campus events such as Homecoming, Dance Marathon, and more. Every spring the group hosts a showcase which allows the members to present work from the year. Orchesis also collaborates with SPIN Theatre Company for some of their performances, such as their annual Musical Theatre Cabaret.
Joining Orchesis involves a short audition process that takes place at the beginning of every fall semester. Auditions include basic technique, a short routine, and improvisation. Orchesis practices three times a week for about six hours total.
Orchesis performs a dance to "Calico Man". Choreographed by Jana Lundell and Lindsey Ahlers.
