It promises to be an exciting year for Luther – selfishly because my nephew will be the third generation Edwards to attend our alma mater – but also because in November, the college inaugurated its eleventh president, Dr. Jenifer K. Ward. President Ward joins the Luther community with more than three decades of experience as an educator, scholar, and academic leader. In a message to the Luther community, President Ward said, “Our work together must be strategic, collaborative, creative, and—most importantly—must articulate what it means to be both grounded in Decorah, Iowa with a face to the world, and set goals for how we can adapt Luther’s past and present for a sustainable future.”
I don’t know about you, but when I visit Decorah and campus, I feel grounded. In mid-August, I took the opportunity to walk the campus, alone, in the quiet of the mid-afternoon summer calm. I passed a group playing volleyball in the grass alongside Ylvi. Shouts and giggles filled the air. As I walked around, I passed a woman who was sitting out overlooking the Oneota Valley on the patio of the Union, but short of those two experiences, there wasn't a soul to be seen. It was quite peaceful and as I passed Brandt, Olson, Larson and Main, my thoughts took me back to the four years we spent on campus. So many memories. So little paper in this letter to relive them.
As a reminder, here are a few ways to stay connected to the institution that gave us all a base from which we then grew and evolved.

¨ Plan a visit to campus: Make sure you save the date for the following year's Homecoming Weekend (October 9-11, 2020) when we will celebrate our 30-year Reunion! Finally, keep in mind that the wonderful Christmas at Luther weekend takes place December 5–8.
Chances are, if you have the opportunity to visit campus and Decorah, you will experience the feeling of being grounded. Grounded in the beauty of the campus and surrounding nature. Grounded in the memories of friendships made. Grounded in the hope for a great future for your college.
