Class of 1982 Spring 2017 Letter

Spring 2017

Hello, Fellow Classmate:

In just about seven months, we will be having our 35-year class reunion in Decorah! I hope that you are planning to attend and making plans. I am looking forward to seeing you there, and your 35th reunion committee is working hard to make the reunion great! Who are those people? They are people who graciously volunteered to work this whole year to prepare the event. Marsha (Weckwerth) Olch and Dave Crowe are co-chairing the committee with me. Our amazing classmate volunteers are

Barb Tostenrud Garrett, Chip Norris, Edye (Gausman) and Dave Ray, Dawn Deines-Christensen, Jone (McDonald) Johnson, Joy Meyer-David, Judy (Eide) Knowler, Karen DeBauche, Kari Hampton, Kris Gregersen, Kris Tostengard Michel, Lynn Mickelsen Dwyer, Marilee Torres, Phil Wold, Roger Henderson, Stuart Geiger, and Sue (Livingston) English.

The committee met last fall for a working meeting day and will meet again in June to finalize plans. In July you will get another letter from me, outlining the details about our reunion. In the meantime, feel free to send pictures from our four years at Luther to Rachel Vsetecka ’09, director of reunion giving, in Luther’s Development Office, who is helping with our reunion. Send real pictures in the mail and she will scan them and mail them back. Or send scans of pictures to her email at [email protected], and she will put them all together into a slide show to show at our reunion dinner.

Also, be sure to check out our “Class of 1982 Facebook page” and “like” us so that you can post great pictures that you find, or keep up with breaking news about the reunion. Go to www.facebook.com/LutherCollege Classof1982/.

Here is some additional Luther news:

  • If you have the itch to travel, you might consider one of the Luther travel tours coordinated by the Alumni Office. This year there is a New England coastal cruise in September, a Holocaust tour in Europe in July, and a trip to Vietnam and Cambodia in November. Read more at www.luther.edu/ alumni.

  • Because this year is the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, Luther is planning all sorts of special events this spring and next fall. There will be special art exhibits, distinguished lectures, and special music. Check out the whole schedule at www.luther.edu/reformation-2017/.

  • Remember Paideia and that we all read The Odyssey the summer before we started at Luther? This year’s first-year students read We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler. If you read it and want excellent questions to consider about the book for you or a book club to use, check out this page for more details: www.luther.edu/paideia/program/summer-reading/.

  • You probably heard that Weston Noble ’43, former director of Nordic Choir, died on December 21, 2016, at age 94. A visitation and prayer service was held December 29, and a private family graveside service was held December 30 at Riverside Cemetery in Riceville, Iowa. A celebration of life will be held at Luther at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at the Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall. More information about Weston’s life can be found here: www.luther.edu/headlines/?story_id=736581.

  • Other music news is that Andrew Last ’97 was named the new conductor of Nordic Choir as of fall 2017. More information about that: www.luther.edu/headlines/?story_id=739476.

We hope you will consider making a contribution to Luther this year. A few years ago, Dave and I decided to set up a monthly EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) to Luther to make our giving easier and make it less likely for us to forget to do it. I know some of you also do this. Some of you give once a year. Regardless of how you give or how much you give, thank you! Whether we give $5, $50, or $500, each gift is important and the percentage of alumni giving is extremely important. In fiscal year 2015, 27.71 percent of the great class of ’82 made a total donation of $49,902.70 to the future of Luther. Our financial gifts fund scholarships and excellent programming for all Luther students, so thanks again.

And, even more exciting, five of our classmates have come together to create a Class of 1982 $82,000.82 Challenge! Simply give or pledge to the Annual Fund and/or our newly created Class of 1982 Scholarship and Doug Kintzinger ’82, David “Chip” Norris ’82, Marsha (Weckwerth) Olch ’82, and Bruce ’82 and Kari (Nottleson) Shatzer ’82 will MATCH your gift! Don't wait! Go to givenow.luther.edu, send in your pledge card, or email [email protected] to learn more.

I have only heard from a few people in our class since my fall letter, so here is the news about our friends:

Thom Davis is assistant professor of education at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Michael Dougherty is the vice president of quality personal systems at HP Inc. in Houston.

Scott Gomer is director of marketing communications at WIDA in Madison, Wis.

Geoffrey Lauer of Iowa City, Iowa, is director of the Brain Injury Alliance of Iowa and accepted the Iowa Association for Justice’s 2016 Public Service Award on behalf of the organization.

I am sorry to write that our classmate, Kim MacInnes-Green of Anchorage, Alaska, died June 26, 2016, at age 61. Kim attended several colleges/universities before receiving a B.A. degree from Luther with a major in theater.  She attended McCormick Seminary in Chicago and met her husband, Ian MacInnes-Green, and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in Wausau, along with her husband. They served congregations throughout the United States, but never the same congregation together. She received a Distinguished Service Award from Luther in 1998 for her early work with AIDS patients. Kim is survived by her husband, Ian MacInnes-Green; son, Samuel MacInnes-Green (Diana); step-daughter, Jacquelyn West (Clay) as well as extended family.

You will hear from me again this summer. I hope you have a happy spring. Take good care.

The Annual Fund – make your gift today:
Your gift. Put to work, right away, where it is needed most.

Last year more than 10,000 alumni, family, and friends supported Luther’s Annual Fund with gifts from $5 to $100,000. Your gift makes a difference for each and every student at Luther, and we are grateful for your support.
