Happy summer! Temperatures are rising and so is excitement regarding our 40-year class reunion. Reunions are a chance to renew old friendships and acquaintances. Perhaps increasingly important at our stage in life, reunions also give us a chance to recall some of the better/best experiences of our early adult years J.
On behalf of the reunion committee, we are excited to share with you the events for our class, listed on the enclosed flyer! You will see that we have a variety of activities planned—we want to make this a fun and memorable reunion. You can sign up for as many or few things as you wish.
The one event we hope everyone will want to attend is the Class of 1977 reception and dinner on Saturday night (Oct. 7) at De Novo Barn. Cost is $35/person. You can sign up for this event when filling out the Homecoming registration form.
Links to the Homecoming registration form and all other class-related activities can be found on our class reunion webpage:
luther.edu/giving/reunions/1977. Please consider this webpage your digital hub for the most complete and up-to-date information. If needed, any last-minute adjustments due to weather or gnome apocalypse will be published there as well.
In addition, on Friday, October 6—classmate Julie (Braastad) Wurtzel will be honored with a Distinguished Service Award! Congratulations, Julie! All alumni are invited to the alumni dinner and award ceremony— 6 p.m. reception, 6:30 p.m. dinner— in the Dahl Centennial Union Cafeteria. Cost is $30/person. You can sign up for this event when filling out the reunion registration form.
There are, of course, many other Homecoming events that are open to everyone. You can see a complete list of these at luther.edu/homecoming/schedule.
We are in need of candid photos from your time at Luther!
We have photos from the yearbook, but other photos showing campus life would be great for reminiscing, and for our special reunion dinner video and poster display featuring fraternities, sororities, athletics, music, etc.
Email or mail your photos (don’t worry, we’ll treat them with care and send back right away!). And, providing names and a brief description would be a great help. Tip: use a post-it if you don’t want to write on the back of the photo!
Send photos to:

There is also an opportunity for individuals and/or groups with musical talent to perform at the Saturday night reception/dinner. Please contact Lois or Mark ([email protected]) if you are interested. Unfortunately, there is no piano available at the De Novo Barn.
Just to recap, please use luther.edu/giving/reunions/1977 as your main hub for all information about our reunion. On that site, you will find further links to register for the reunion dinner, sign up for reunion activities, get the most up-to-date information about the reunion and reunion events, get information on lodging and parking, link to the Facebook page Deb Wiley created for us (it’s a great place to reconnect with classmates), link to the online alumni directory to look up classmates, and link to other information sites about Homecoming 2017 and Decorah.
On our class reunion webpage, you can learn more about the two priorities of our campaign—the Annual Fund and the Class of 1977 Scholarship Fund. We hope you’ll join us with a gift/pledge in honor of the reunion. Many thanks to those who have already contributed! We are almost halfway to our goal as we write this letter! Absolutely fantastic.
One final personal note … Serving on the reunion committee has given us a glimpse of what is to come – thinking back to our Luther years has resurrected memories that have been dormant for far too long. Do you remember the day you moved into your freshman dorm? …your freshman roommate(s)? …the autumn leaves on the beautiful Luther campus? Paideia? Friends? Classes? Organizations? Faculty? Sports? Homecoming? Messiah? J-term? Food service? Music? SAC? Dante’s? Mabe’s? Dunning’s Spring? Canoeing? Graduation? That was just the first 4 years. Imagine what has happened to your fellow classmates in the 40 years since then! It’s time to share your memories, adventures, and experiences. Please sign up now. We look forward to seeing you in Decorah this fall!

P.S. Did you travel to Malta while at Luther? A Malta Reception will take place on Saturday, October 7 from 1:00 p.m.–2:30 p.m. in the Helen Farwell Lounge in Farwell Hall! Professors Emeriti Uwe Rudolf and Ruth Caldwell will host a gathering for alumni and students who participated in the Malta program as well as alumni from Malta.
