Class of 1963 Spring 2017 Letter

Spring 2017

“1963 Class Agent Letter”

Warm greetings from Palm Springs, California. It’s February 23 as I write this letter. Dick and I have just returned from sharing delightful lunch with Luther emeritus staff member Curt Reiso ’54 and fellow classmate George Wallman and his wife, Joyce Behrens ’65. Mr. Reiso and Weston Noble ’43 were friends and colleagues at Luther for 60 years. Imagine!

In January we spent time in Palm Springs with Joe ’64 and Emily (Holmstad) Bodensteiner ’64, and Wynn Berven ‘64 and his wife, Linda. These mini-reunions are a great joy, and remind us how our time at Luther forged our futures and bonded us in friendships forever.

You will most likely receive this letter after Luther’s second annual Giving Day on Thursday, March 9, but it’s still a great event to note; a fun day of sharing Luther love on social media and helping raise money for the college’s Annual Fund. I hope many of you were able to participate this year; if not, make a point of joining us next year.

On a sad note, Weston Noble died on December 21, 2016, at age 94. He lived life actively until the very end. Mr. Noble leaves a legacy of musical excellence in service to the college that is unparalleled, an inspiration to us all. The man simply loved Luther. The Luther Magazine has profiled his life and accomplishments. A Celebration of Life service will be held on campus in the Center for Faith and Life at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 13. Come if you can.

Andrew Last ‘97, assistant professor of music and conductor of Collegiate Chorale and Norsemen, has been appointed Nordic Choir conductor and director of choral activities. He also serves as director of Dorian Summer Music Camps, which were started by Weston Noble in 1949 and are still going strong. We’ve have two grandsons who are regular Dorian campers and sing the praises of Andrew Last. He will officially assume his new responsibilities in September.

Remember: We alumni play an important role in recruiting new students for Luther. This summer the Admissions Office will roll out a new scholarship program for students that apply to Luther because of an alumni connection. Stay tuned.

I encourage you to use the alumni website to get current information about all the exciting things that are happening and being planned for Luther alums. You can check on alumni events scheduled in your area, check the upcoming tours hosted by the college for Luther alums, and get a schedule of important upcoming dates; for example, Decorah Nordic Fest, July 27-29, and the many events planned to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.

The Luther leadership is currently engaged in a strategic planning process that will build on the strengths of the past and the present to equal the challenges of the future. Your input is appreciated. Take a few moments to reflect on this question, and use my email address to share your responses.

Question: From your perspective, what must Luther College do to prepare its students for success in the future? What are the 21st century survival skills and competencies required of a liberal arts college graduate?

Finally, I could use your help preparing this letter. Please send news of yourself we can share with our classmates. Where are you living? What are you doing? How are you experiencing life at this time of life? Lessons learned? Gratitudes acknowledged? Memories of your formative years at Luther? Thanks!

May the New Year be a good year for you and yours.

Keep in touch.

Class Note

Sandra (Sellers) Hanson of Brooklyn, N.Y., was named the 2016 recipient of the twenty-fifth Francis Andrew March Award by the Association of Departments of English.

Your gift. Put to work, right away, where it is needed most.

Last year more than 10,000 alumni, family, and friends supported Luther’s Annual Fund with gifts from $5 to $100,000. Your gift makes a difference for each and every student at Luther, and we are grateful for your support.

This list includes all gifts received January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2016. Making a gift each and every year is an investment in the lives of Luther students and a show of support for the Luther College community. Thank you for your support of Luther College through your giving.
