Greetings to the over-the-60th class of Luther alumns! Do you still think back to memories about our special day and luncheon on October 7 last year? Did you finish reading all the entries from our 1957 Reunion Booklet? Have you read one of Jerry Tvedt’s books?
Our two photos taken at our reunion luncheon did not make it into Luther Magazine; however, they are online. Go to luther.edu/homecoming/photos-2017. It is correctly identified in the line of pictures as Class of ‘57 although on the pictures themselves it says Class of ’67. Maybe we look younger than we are!
As many of you know, Thursday, March 8, was Luther's third annual Giving Day! Thousands tuned in to an all-day livestream from Marty's and joined the fun through social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and more). Overall, a whopping $474,718 was raised for the Luther Fund - WOW! If you'd like to relive the fun (and see the 12-hour livestream), visit luther.edu/giving-day. THANK YOU to all who donated and made this day such a success!
The Class of 1957 Scholarship granted three students scholarships in our name. They are Jared Barnes from Fort Worth, Texas in physics; Afton Jeske from Eldora, Iowa in education; and Grant Heller from Rochester, Minn. in biology. They have written me thank you letters and I want to pass on their thanks. We gave them a total of $6,199 from our fund of $135,502. YOU gave that amount. Thank YOU.
Did you ever think that a Luther grad would be involved with rocket science? Did you read in Luther winter 2018 p.17 the article “Engineering Private Space Travel”? And with recycling p.6: “TRUE TRASH Campus Cuts Landfill Waste”? We can learn a lot from our alumni news including that you can join the upcoming Nordic Choir Companion Tour to Germany and Czechia in May-June this year (luther.edu/alumni/tours).
As I wrote in the fall letter, a new program has been launched called the Alumni Ambassador Program (luther.edu/ambassadors) whereby you as alums can refer a high school student to Luther College, and every referred student who enrolls at Luther will receive a $1,000 scholarship (in your name) each year—for four years. You will have a direct impact on a student’s Luther experience with this $4,000 scholarship!
Please DO send in your memories and happenings for these letters. If you outlive the rest of us, we won’t learn what was in your obituary.
In closing, I hope you'll consider supporting current Luther students with a donation to the Luther Fund. Use the enclosed form and reusable envelope to mail in your gift or visit givenow.luther.edu today! Thank you!
