Class of 1949 Fall 2018 Letter

Fall 2018

Dear 49ers—

Greeting from Decorah and Luther College. It is time for all class agents to author our fall newsletter, which is much sooner than what has been normal in the past. As of this writing, (August 7th), school has not started, fall sports practices are about to begin, so school activities are still in the future. Usually our first newsletter has been written at the conclusion of Homecoming. However, Homecoming is much later than usual, which for 2018, the weekend dates are October 26, 27, and 28.

In the past I have always asked for classmate news items that I might use. That seldom happened!!! WOW—I received an item recently and I will write about her. Mary Louise Ramsland, from Westby, Wis., enrolled at Luther in the fall of 1945. After her Freshman year she did not return to Luther, but is listed in the college records as a 49er. She now lives in senior residence in Westmont, Ill.

We have generous amounts of rainfall this summer. Our campus is wonderfully maintained and is a “thing of beauty”. Any and all visitors must be impressed. Decorah had a wonderful Nordic Fest in late July. Large crowds attended and the weather is perfect. My wife is a garden club member and they arrange for three locals to have their gardens open for viewing. The turn outs were tremendous. I am a member of the Luren Singing Society. We participated in singing events all three days. Incidentally, the Luren Singers celebrated 150 years of singing in 2018. We are a voluntary organization that began in March of 1868.

You are probably aware that Luther is seeking a new President!! President Carlson has announced that she will leave after the forthcoming school year.

As always, I must conclude with the reminder that if at all possible, please remember our college with some few or lots of dollars. As Luther’s enrollment declines, so do the dollars.
