50 years ago (yes... it has been that long!) in the Fall of 1970, Head Coach Edsel Schweizer led a group of young men to an Iowa Conference title with a 6-1 record and 8-2 overall. Schweizer called the team his "biggest surprise in 19 years as head coach at Luther College." The small, young, and inexperienced team was not even considered a prime threat in the Iowa Conference at the beginning of the season. In the end, Luther was honored by an invitation to the Midwest Region NCAA Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio.
This coming fall, on the weekend of October 23-24, 2020, we are gathering the members of that team, coaches, trainers and managers back together for a reunion celebration.
There will be an informal Friday evening social gathering at a site TBA, brunch Saturday morning in the Peace Dining Room, a tour of the athletic facilities, and recognition at the football game (Luther vs. Loras) Saturday afternoon. We will gather again at Pulpit Rock Brewery following the game. We can order Mabe's Pizza to be delivered to our tables at the Brewery.
Weather permitting golf may also be a Friday afternoon option.
Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott is offering us a special "Stagg Bowl Team" rate of $119/night and we tentatively have 15 rooms blocked. Call the hotel directly at 563-382-8800 and then hit -0- to talk directly to the desk. Weekends in the fall are always busy in Decorah... So make your reservations now!
We are excited to have the opportunity to get back together, renew old friendships, tell stories and relive those days gone by. The playing field is now artificial turf… and it is blue. Just one of the many changes over the last 50 years. I hope you are looking forward to come and experience those changes.
Bring your photos and memorabilia to share. Here are some photos we managed to dig up in the Luther archives you might enjoy:
We also have uncovered a number of 16mm game films that we hope to digitize over the summer and share with you that weekend. We have not found the actual Stagg Bowl film yet, but we are still looking!
We are still trying to update addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. Whether you can make the reunion or not we would appreciate your responding with updated contact information. In addition, if you have kept up with anyone else and are willing to share their contact info, please do so.
Hope to see you in October!

Just an FYI, we are also inviting the members of the only other Luther bowl game qualifier, the 1955 Corn Bowl team, to gather and celebrate with us on the 65th Anniversary of their bowl game vs. Western Illinois University.
