In the fall of 1954, Head Coach Edsel Schweizer led a group of young men to the college's first undefeated season (9-0), and then in the fall of 1955, Luther (9-0-1) was honored by an invitation to the Corn Bowl versus Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill. The Norse defeated the Leathernecks 24-20 in a hard fought game.
Next fall, on the weekend of October 16-17, 2021, we are gathering the members of those teams, and the coaches, trainers and managers back together for a reunion celebration.
We will gather for brunch Saturday morning in the Peace Dining Room, and recognition at the football game Saturday afternoon. We will gather again at Pulpit Rock Brewery following the game. We can order Mabe's Pizza to be delivered to our tables at the Brewery.
We are excited to have the opportunity to get back together, renew old friendships, tell stories and relive those days gone by. The playing field is now artificial turf… and it is blue. Just one of the many changes over the last 65 years. I hope you are looking forward to come and experience those changes.
Bring your photos and memorabilia to share. Here are some photos we managed to dig up in the Luther archives you might enjoy: www.luther.edu/alumni/events/corn-bowl/corn-bowl-photos/
We also have the game film from our previous reunion to enjoy once more!
Hope to see you in October!
Just an FYI, we are joining members of the only other Luther bowl game qualifier, the 1970 Stagg Bowl team, to celebrate with us on the 50th Anniversary of their bowl game vs. Capital University in Columbus, Ohio.
