Gather Us In, All: Transforming the Musical Establishment for Good
A Virtual Conversation
Join Dr. Stacie Mickens '02, Dr. Beth Willer '03, and Dr. Amanda Weber '08 in conversation about the work they have been doing within their respective fields to open up the canon to a more inclusive slate of repertoire, especially in terms of women composers, and to welcome more diverse participants as music makers. Reflecting on their own experiences as performers, conductors, and teachers, our panelists will consider the rich opportunities of drawing historically underrepresented voices into the musical tradition and the challenges they have faced in doing so.
All Phi Beta Kappa members, Drs. Mickens, Willer, and Weber work at the intersection of teaching, scholarship, conducting, and performance. Dr. Mickens is Associate Professor of Horn at the University of North Texas; she performs with the Lantana Trio, a women’s brass trio, and is active in orchestrating workshops to amplify the inclusion and work of women brass musicians. Dr. Willer is Associate Professor and Director of Choral Studies at the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University; she also founded and serves as the artistic director of the Lorelei Ensemble, a premiere vocal ensemble dedicated to empowering women’s voices. Dr. Weber is the Director of Worship and the Arts at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis and founder of Voices of Hope, an organization that builds choral singing communities in correctional facilities in the state of Minnesota.
