The Lightning Thief!

Hello everyone!

I hope you are having a Happy Thursday!

I myself am having an excellent day, made especially fantastic by a performance of The Lightning Thief from the amazing Theatreworks USA, a professional touring company of actors that brings family-friendly shows to audiences across the country.

I have literally been looking forward to their performance all year.

Why, you ask?

The show I saw today was a musical based on the children’s novel The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, the first book in a series.  In the stories, a boy named Percy Jackson discovers that the gods and monsters of ancient Greek mythology are alive and well and that he is a son of Poseidon, god of the sea.  Percy journeys to Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp for demigods like him, and with the new friends he meets there, Percy goes on a series of quests, fighting monsters and saving the world, etc.  These books were a staple of my middle school years, and I remain a huge fan.  I actually own a Camp Half-Blood t-shirt, which I am wearing today.

So when I heard about a year ago that The Lightning Thief was being adapted into a musical, I was super excited but didn’t expect I would be able to see it myself.  Since the show is only being performed by Theatreworks USA, I never imagined the musical would come to a stage near me.  Little did I know The Lightning Thief would be coming to my own backyard!  I was pretty excited when I found out, and that’s an understatement.

The performance didn’t disappoint.

There were no evening shows, so I went to the twelve-thirty matinee, which was packed with lots of excited kids on field trips.  Unfortunately, the show started at the same time that my religion class ended, so I had to book it to the CFL as soon as class was over.  I barely made it into the theater on time; the opening number was starting when I slipped into my seat.  Luckily, I didn’t even need a ticket – just another perk of being a Luther student.  And the show itself was really great!  The cast was so enthusiastic; the music and dancing were a ton of fun; and there was fast-paced action from start to finish.  Also, I appreciated the use of toilet paper guns.

If you’re interested in seeing a montage of great moments from the musical, you can watch some of the best parts on the Theatreworks USA youtube channel here!

Overall, I had a fantastic time at the show today and hope that Theatreworks USA will come back to Luther again soon!  I feel so lucky to be at a college that provides such fun entertainment all the time!

And now, I must go do homework.  Have a wonderful week!
