I hope you’ve all been having a marvelous week!
Things here at Luther have been great! The weather has warmed up considerably, which is awesome. The birds have started singing again, and the squirrels have started chasing each other like the crazy wild rodents they are, which is thoroughly entertaining.
Speaking of entertaining, last weekend was full of great entertainment here at Luther! Saturday night, many of my friends were a part of Brandt’s Open Mic night, which was a talent show held in the Marty’s café. The show featured swing dancing, various musical numbers, and a very well-acted monologue about a deep love for…towels?
There was a great variety of performances (as well as free snacks!), and I’m so glad I went. The amount of talent here is just incredible, and the RAs did an amazing job of setting everything up. The college works really hard to provide fun activities for students, and it shows.
I tried to get good photos, but they mostly turned out blurry. Alas.
I will post a blurry picture anyway:
Also incredibly entertaining: the top-notch magician Ben Seidman came all the way from Los Angeles to perform a show for us on Friday night! The show was a mix of magic, comedy, pick-pocketing, and general awesomeness, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. While the show wasn’t recorded, you can see a few of the tricks we saw and some other great magic at Ben Seidman’s YouTube channel here.
But my personal favorite part of the show was getting to go onstage and be a part of it! Toward the end of the performance, I volunteered to be in one of the tricks, and I was one hundred percent amazed. While handcuffed, he ripped a page I had chosen out of a book I was holding shut - without my noticing - and put it into the purse of someone in the front row. Crazy. I mean, you would think I would have seen him do that, right? Right?
I had a ridiculously good time and laughed so hard. Plus, I got a free t-shirt, and you can’t beat that with a stick. After the show, I got to talk to Ben Seidman; he is a super great guy and even took a photo with me:
The magic show was by far the coolest thing I’ve done during J-term and is one of my favorite memories of the year! The Luther Student Activities Council does a stellar job of arranging free events like this, and it’s just one of the many reasons why I love going to school here.
Ah…I love Luther so much.
And now, I am going to go work on my homework.
Have a wonderful week!
