I have been in Beautiful Mess, the all-female a cappella group on campus, since my first year of college. I auditioned for the group during fall semester my freshman year. For the audition, you were to sing a minute of any song that showcases your voice. After you sang the song of your choice, your vocal range was tested. The auditioning process wasn’t too difficult, which alleviated my nerves and allowed me to feel more comfortable.
A couple days after I auditioned for Beautiful Mess, I received a message saying that I received a callback. I couldn’t believe it! I entered the callback feeling more nervous than my audition. I was so close and didn’t want to ruin my chances. After the callback, we received an email with the official list of Beautiful Mess members. I scanned the list and found my name. I made it! I have been in Beautiful Mess ever since and I have loved every minute of it.
This year, we had our final concert of the year in Storre Theatre. Beautiful Mess, Bromatic Progression, Fermata Nowhere, and Undeclared all gathered to perform. Bromatic Progression and Undeclared are all-male a cappella groups and Fermata Nowhere includes both females and males.
My favorite thing about being in the all-female group are the genuine relationships created. Beautiful Mess is so much more than a group of females singing. We care deeply about one another and recognize the power of sisterhood. Performing music is great and all, but it is even better when you are performing music with some of your best friends. While I will miss the Beautiful Mess members who are graduating, I look forward to what the next year will bring!
