Here in Decorah, Iowa, the snow is finally melting and the sun is beginning to shine more consistently. The nice weather we have been having has been motivating students to be outside more often. There are a variety of enjoyable outdoor activities you can participate in on and off campus.
My favorite activity that I like to do outside is hammocking. There are a number of good trees to set up your hammock on and off campus. I especially like the trees that are outside of the Union. They are the perfect length and can allow multiple people to hammock at one time. My friends and I sometimes set aside time to hammock together. It is an excellent way to relax while enjoying the outdoors.
When the weather is especially nice, I like to do my homework outside. I set up a blanket alone or with friends and I work. Not only am I soaking up the sun, I am also being productive. Warm weather increases my mood and motivates me to get my work done. I highly recommend setting up on the lawn outside of the Preus Library. The large amount of space on the lawn allows you to spread yourself and your belongings out. Working at a desk does not always allow you to have as much room as you would like.
What I enjoy most about the nice weather is the way that it alters my mood. With the hateful acts that have occured on campus and across the nation, it is easy to feel hopeless. However, when the sun comes out, the physical warmth you feel can allow you to feel an emotional warmth. The sun makes me feel happy. Happiness can also bring optimism. Because the sun can increase your mood, you are able to feel more motivated to be outside and do your work. I hope that everyone gets a chance to be outside and feel the warmth, both physically and emotionally.
