Love Your Melon

One of the organizations that I'm involved with on campus is our Love Your Melon campus crew. I decided to highlight our group in this week's post.

I would say that Love Your Melon is definitely known as "the hat company," and for good reason! Many people have, or are at least familiar with the awesome beanies that they sell. That's one of the main things people associate with the company, but they are so much more than their hats!

Their mission statement reads as follows: "Love Your Melon is an apparel brand dedicated to giving a hat to every child battling cancer in America as well as supporting nonprofit organizations who lead the fight against pediatric cancer." Yes, not only do they sell their awesome hats to the public—but they also give them out to kids across the country that are fighting cancer! It's a super cool thing that they do.

They also support organizations such as Be the Match, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and Ronald McDonald House Charities. A lot of the profit they make off of selling their hats, apparel, and other accessories to the general public is given to these non-profits and many others.

Here at Luther, we're involved in their cause through our campus crew! There are "campus crews" at colleges and universities all over the country. Our role as crew members is to essentially promote the Love Your Melon brand and increase awareness about childhood cancer. We accomplish that through our various social media platforms, like Facebook and Instagram—as well as through word of mouth!

It's a ton of fun to be on the crew! I joined pretty much right when I got to Luther as a first-year, and this semester I became the crew captain. That's been an exciting role to fill, as we've had a lot more people join the crew this year! Besides social media promotion, our campus crew also does some events at Luther.

We try to have a "photo shoot day" each semester, which is always a lot of fun. We did that for this semester a couple weekends ago, which was a blast! :) It helped that we have a lot more people on our crew, too. We also try to do a card making station each semester. We table in the Union and get people to stop by and make a card for a specific kid with cancer or a children's hospital.

For our card making station this week, we're sending the cards to kids at the University of Iowa Children's Hospital. Hopefully we'll have a good turnout and be able to send them a lot of cards at the end of the week!

We've also been thinking about having some "crew bonding" things. That might be anything from watching a movie and having snacks to going to dinner in the caf or something. We ran out of time to do that this semester though, so we'll try to do one (or more!) of those next semester! :)

Feel free to comment below or email us if you have any more questions! We'd love to hear from you! :)
