Because we place such a high value on what our students contribute to the campus community, we offer a wide variety of scholarships and awards based on demonstrated academic excellence, musical talent, and other criteria.

Scholarships from Outside Sources

Erdman Prize Competition

Luther College is now taking applications for the 2016-17 Erdman Prize. This competition offers (1) $5,000 grand prize and (2) $2,500 prizes to full-time Luther students who can best demonstrate their entrepreneurial spirit through a business venture they have already established. Interested candidates need to complete the Erdman Prize Competition Application and submit a completed portfolio by April 4, 2016.

Carver Scholars Program

The Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust is once again offering the Carver Scholars Program to students who will begin their junior year of college in the Fall of 2016. The program is designed to assist students who present evidence of unusual social and/or other barriers to attending college full-time. Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens and have graduated from an Iowa high school or have been an Iowa resident for the past five years. Applicants must also have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale and demonstrate financial need. Students can apply online at Carver Trust by April 1, 2016.

Come 2 Iowa Senior Scholarship

Iowa Student Loan is offering a $1,000 scholarship opportunity to current high school seniors from Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota or Wisconsin who will attend an Iowa college in the fall 2016. Applicants must register between February 15 and May 13, 2016 and follow the instructions they will receive by email to complete two online financial literacy tutorials and a related assessment. Business and Professional Women of Iowa Foundation

The Business and Professional Women of Iowa Foundation is offering four $1,000 scholarship opportunities to non-traditional students who are residents of Iowa and have graduated high school five or more years ago and now want to start or resume a college education. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, scholastic ability, leadership skills and career goals. Applicants must submit the formal application, a copy of official transcripts, and provide three letters of reference one each from an employer, teacher, and community leader. Interested candidates need to complete the BPW/IOWA Foundation Application. The submission deadline is March 23, 2016.

Hovland Scholarship

The Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation is offering this $2,000 scholarship to students who will be entering their junior year in the Fall of 2016 at an accredited college. Applicants must be of Norwegian descent, with preference given to applicants from the Bomlo Community of Norway. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and have a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA. Apply online at SFACF by July 15, 2016. 

Ellie Shaw Scholarship

The Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN) is offering a scholarship opportunity to incoming/current students. Applicants must be women and should be passionate about advancing women in the public policy sector and hold informal or formal leadership positions in their communities. Preference will be given to students attending PLEN seminars from Luther College. Applicants must write an essay, in one to two pages, addressing why you want to attend this specific PLEN seminar, what you hope to gain from the experience and how the Shaw scholarship will help you. Interested students should visit EEPURL. Scholarship applications for each seminar are due six weeks prior to the start of each PLEN seminar.

Westmar Endowment Scholarship Program

The Iowa College Foundation is offering three types of scholarships to incoming/current students. ICF is offering two $5,000 awards, fifteen $1,000 awards and twenty $500 awards. Priority will be given to current residents of Northwest Iowa who have a family member who attended or was an employee of Westmar. Consideration will then be given to residents of LeMars, Iowa. Lastly, students who have a family member who attended or was an employee of Westmar will be given consideration. Applicants must plan to attend one of ICF’s colleges or universities and have a GPA of at least 3.0 to qualify for the $5,000 scholarship and at least 2.5 for the remaining scholarships. IHERF Scholarship Program

The Iowa Hospital Education Research Foundation is offering multiple scholarship opportunities to current students seeking health care education. Applicants must complete the applicant information form, complete the college enrollment verification form, submit an original transcript and complete the reference round. Scholarship recipients must commit to working one year in an Iowa hospital. Interested students should visit Iowa Hospital Scholarships. The submission deadline is March 30, 2016.

The Des Moines Mothers of Multiples Scholarship

Des Moines Mothers of Multiples is offering a $500 scholarship opportunity to incoming students who are a multiple birth student and are a resident of Iowa. Applicants must complete the application, provide an official copy of your most recent academic transcript, have a GPA of at least 3.0, submit two letters of recommendation, submit a 300-500 word essay addressing one of the two provided prompts, provide an acceptance letter from the school and submit copies of Birth Certificates for the applicant and the multiple birth child/children. Frank L. Greathouse Government Accounting Scholarship

The Government Finance Officers Association is offering two $8,000 scholarships to current students pursuing a degree in accounting. Students must be preparing for a career in state and local government finance. Applicants must complete the application, write a statement of proposed career plan, submit a transcript and resume as well as a letter of recommendation from your academic advisor or accounting program chair. Interested students should visit GFOA. The submission deadline is February 19, 2016.

Minorities In Government Finance Scholarship

The Government Finance Officers Association is offering an $8,000 scholarship opportunity to current upper-division undergraduates in public administration, governmental accounting, finance, political science, economics or business administration. Students must be preparing for a career in state and local government finance and must belong to one of the following groups: Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, Hispanic or Latino. Applicants must complete the application, write a statement of proposed career plan, submit a transcript and resume as well as a letter of recommendation from your academic advisor or department chair. Web Development of Tomorrow Scholarship

WebAdaptive is offering a $1000 scholarship to current students who have declared a major in the STEM field, are a part of the LGBTQ community, and are a U.S. citizen. Applicants must write an essay, 600-800 words, on the topic of emerging web technology, submit an application with a letter of recommendation, and have a GPA of at least 2.5 for the preceding semester. Hartford Technology Rental Scholarship

Hartford Technology Rental is offering two $1,000 scholarships to full-time Junior or Senior students with a major related to IT. Applicants must have maintained a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all academic years proceeding the year of the award grant, show financial need,  complete an application, and write a short response on what you plan to do in the field of information technology. Interested students should visit Hartford Technology Rental. The submission deadlines are May 15, 2016 and December 15, 2016.  

Iowa Student Loan Scholarships

Iowa Student Loan is offering thirty $2,000 scholarships to Iowa high school seniors. Applicants must attend college in the fall of 2016, complete two Iowa Student Loan online tools and take a related financial literacy assessment test. NCR Past Governors Award

The North Central Region of the Soroptimist International of the Americas is offering a $2,000 scholarship opportunity to a female student engaged in or entering Post Graduate education. Applicants must reside in the NCR (IA, MN, NE, ND, SD) or attend a NCR four year college or university. Applicants should be outstanding academically and preference will be given to women working toward a career in public service, international studies or in an academic field of study with goals to improve the lives of women and girls. Wells Fargo Veterans Scholarship Program

Wells Fargo Veterans Scholarship Program is offering scholarships to veterans or spouses of disabled veterans. Applicants must be honorably-discharged veterans or spouses of disabled veterans who have served in the United States military, the Reserves and National Guard, and have received a Certificate of Eligibility from the Department of Veterans Affairs, be high school or GED graduates, be Pell-eligible and have a GPA of at least 2.5. With the application, applicants must submit a current transcript, a completed Applicant Appraisal Form, a copy of DD214, a certificate of eligibility from the Department of Veterans Affairs, a Student Aid Report from most recent FAFSA filing and a financial aid award letter. Future of Assisted Living Scholarship

SeniorAdvisor.com is offering three $2,000 scholarships to current students. Beyond Wellness Chiropractic Center is offering a $1,000 scholarship opportunity to incoming/current students. EverSpark Autism Awareness Scholarship

EverSpark Interactive is offering a $1,000 scholarship opportunity to incoming/current students who have been diagnosed with autism or are studying autism-related research. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of at least 2.6, submit an official copy of their transcript and submit either a video essay or a written essay no longer than 1,000 words addressing one of the three provided prompts. Anna May Allan Endowed Nursing Scholarship

The Mary Greeley Foundation is offering the Anna May Allan Endowed Nursing Scholarship of $2,500 to a nursing student who has graduated from an Iowa high school. Applicants must complete an application, have a minimum 3.0 GPA in their latest academic year, and show financial need. J. Ben Buck Scholarship

The Mary Greeley Foundation is offering the J. Ben Beck Scholarship of $1,000 to a student who is pursuing a health-related career and graduated from Ames High School. Applicants must complete an application, including two reference forms, and have a cumulative 3.0 GPA in their latest academic year. Helen Sidles Undergraduate Nursing Scholarship

The Mary Greeley Foundation is offering the Helen Sidles Undergraduate Nursing Scholarship of $1,000 to students entering their final year of nursing school. Applicants must complete an application and have a cumulative 2.7GPA during their latest academic year. Applications can be found at Mary Greeley Foundation and are due on March 31, 2016.

Horatio Alger Honeywell Scholarship

The Horatio Alger Association is offering ten $10,000 scholarships to current freshmen. Applicants must pursuit a degree in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or math and demonstrate financial need. Students must also be United States citizens, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, and display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity. Interested students should visit Horatio Alger. KaplunMarx Scholarship

KaplunMarx is offering a $1,000 scholarship opportunity to incoming/current students. The Jim Dodson Law Scholarship

Jim Dodson Law is offering a $1,500 scholarship opportunity to current students. TrichStop’s Trichotillomania Awareness Scholarship

TrichStop is offering a $500 scholarship opportunity to incoming/current students who are diagnosed with Trichotillomania.
