“To me, diversity is important because it’s something that is unique to each of us.”

Hi I’m Cleo Garza and I’m currently a student at Luther College. I am the second person in my family to come to Luther, the first being my mom who graduated in 1991. I’m a theatre major focusing more on the technical side of theatre. My dream job would be to be a part of an international touring company as a stage manager. I work in the scene shop building the sets for all the productions on campus including Christmas at Luther, and I also work in the admissions office as a Diversity Ambassador. To me, diversity is important because it’s something that is unique to each of us. I identify as a latina and also a member of the LGBTQ community. On campus everyone is uniquely different but there is always a safe place or group where you will find acceptance. Being open about who I am on campus has given me the opportunity to be friends with people like me and who accept me. As a diversity ambassador, I think it’s important that every student who comes to Luther finds a place where they fit in that they feel accepted while feeling comfortable and safe being on who they are on campus and around Decorah.
