Using Intergroup Dialogue Pedagogies to Build Faculty/Staff Capacity around Diversity and Inclusion

  • Repeats: Every day from February 22, 2020 to February 23, 2020.
  • Date: Saturday, February 22, 2020
  • Time: 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
  • Location: Baker Commons

The goal of this two-day workshop is to support faculty, staff, and student learning and competencies around inter- and intragroup relations, conflict, and social justice across a range of social identities, including race, gender, sexuality, social class, religion, and nationality.

Using Intergroup Dialogue (IGD) pedagogies as a framework, with a focus on experiential exercises that encourage self-reflection, this interactive workshop will engage participants in a range of topical areas including:

  • Creating and maintaining a safe classroom climate
  • Exploring social identities, microaggressions, unconscious bias, and how they impact student learning and faculty/staff interactions
  • Teaching sensitive or controversial topics (e.g., power, privilege, inequality)
  • Engaging conflict, emotion, and resistance in a productive manner
  • Offering shared language and methods for building a social justice community

The workshop will conclude with discussion about promising practices and how to effectively integrate IGD principles into traditional classes and other co-curricular activities at Luther College.
