This half-day workshop, led by Writing Director Mike Garcia, will focus on grading and responding to student writing in courses across the disciplines. Questions will include the following: How can faculty manage the “paper load” by providing efficient, precise commentary? How can we avoid giving comments that students won't understand or put to use in future drafts and assignments? How can we help students assess their own writing independently so they don't become too dependent on our feedback? And how can we effectively encourage and model the revision behaviors we want to see from our students? In this workshop, we’ll review the research on effective response to student writing and examine several types of commenting and grading styles. Then we’ll talk about our own strategies. In particular, we’ll pay close attention to context: how different assignments and learning goals necessitate different types of response. Participants will receive a $25 stipend.
