Work Study profile for Benjamin Henson '16.

Major: Music Education

Work Study Position: Music Office Student Worker

If you’ve ever looked for upcoming events on Luther’s Music department website, then you’ve experienced part of Ben’s work. His primary role is to update the events web page and make sure information for recitals, concerts, and other department events is accurate.

How did you get the job?

I’ve been working in the music office since my sophomore year. Last year, my supervisor asked me if I would be interested in helping to expand the events web page so that more detailed information could be added.

What new skills have you learned?

I now consider myself experienced in working with websites, something I knew nothing about previously. I’ve gained networking skills since I have to be in constant contact with ensemble directors and professors for information about their concerts and recitals.

Has anything surprising happened while working in this position?

There's always someone having fun in the music office. Recently there has been a rubber lizard that hides in various places around the office.

How do you see your work study experience affecting your future?

I plan on becoming a high school orchestra director and my experience in advertising for concerts, designing web pages, and communicating with educational faculty will certainly be a benefit.

What type of person do you feel is suited best for your type of work study position?

My position requires someone who plans ahead, pays attention to detail, and is organized.

What do you like best about the position?

My work study allows for a lot of flexibility in terms of when I work. I set aside a certain amount of time each week, but if I need more time to study for a test, I can always move the work to a different day. I just have to make sure to cover all of the events coming up in the next few weeks.
