Work Study Positions: Gospel Choir Student Coordinator and College Ministries Office Assistant

Major: Business Management with certificate in International Business

Annē facilitates day-to-day happenings in the College Ministries office. She assists with organizing and publicizing events and activities. Annē also coordinates Gospel Choir rehearsals and performances, which includes promoting awareness, recruiting members, and arranging musicians.

How did you get the jobs?

The campus pastors recruited me for the position of office assistant at the end of my first year at Luther, and the previous coordinator asked me to be the new Gospel Choir student coordinator around the same time. She knew I was a dedicated Gospel Choir member and excited about the mission of our choir. After an interview with Campus Pastor Mike Blair, the previous coordinator prepared me for the new, formal leadership position. I took over at the beginning of sophomore year and have continued ever since.

What skills have you gained?

I know my leadership skills have grown through my time as the Gospel Choir student coordinator. I have learned how to communicate effectively and facilitate teamwork and collaboration among large groups, skills that will help in a variety of work environments.

In day-to-day office tasks and in bigger projects, I have developed an attention to detail in my work needed to create an effective program, poster, etc. I have also learned the importance of flexibility and creativity in my work.

Finally, I have learned the value of adding a personal touch to projects and focusing on the people I am working with and the community I am serving.

Has anything surprised you in these positions?

I am continually amazed by the outpouring of campus-wide support here at Luther.

What type of person do you feel is best-suited for your type of work study position?

I think someone with a fun, outgoing personality and a strong work ethic would be a good fit for both of these positions. Flexibility and a positive attitude would be important qualities, too.

What do you like best about the positions?

I enjoy working with and learning from the staff administrative assistant, who is an awesome mentor and supervisor! I have learned so much from her—from work-specific information like how to use databases and create spreadsheets to meaningful life lessons on the importance of faith, family, and friends.

I really enjoy seeing Campus Ministries “behind-the-scenes” and understanding the scope of activities we are involved in each year. Also, it’s been rewarding to get to know the campus pastors better while working on projects in the office.

There are so many aspects of my role with Gospel Choir that I enjoy, such as meeting and recruiting new members each year and working with the choir director and Campus Pastor Mike to organize Gospel Choir performances. I have made lifelong friendships with people in this choir that I will always cherish. I am blessed by those I get to sing with and so thankful for the the perseverance and genuine enthusiasm they bring. It’s fun to work with such a talented choir and make gospel music together!
