Sesquicentennial staff development

What does it mean that we are a Lutheran college? How do we differ from other faith-based colleges? How do we respond when a student says her religion class shattered her faith? Staff and faculty are invited to participate in a half-day session to learn more about Luther's identity and philosophy as a college of the church. Led by Mike Blair and Kristin Swanson, the session will be Tuesday, June 21, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., lunch is included. Optional field trip to follow the session at 1 p.m. to the Vesterheim.

Winneshiek Medical Center will present HERway Conversations - a casual, educational community health talk series for women of any age. TG150 update and input sought

As we enter into summer, Task Group 150 has accomplished much with more to be done. We are pleased to provide an update to the community as well as a revised draft collection of strategic actions for your review and comment. Northeast corner RC lot closed June 12-17

The parking lot by the northeast corner of Regents Center will be closed the week of June 12-17 to allow for a physical demonstration of the proposed Aquatic Center on June 16. We are sorry for any inconvenience. There should be ample parking in the larger section of the Regents Center lot.

OFS closes out end of year

The college's fiscal year ended May 31. The Office for Financial Services reminds all faculty and staff that supplies, materials, etc., must have been received by May 31 to be expensed to a FY 10-11 budget.

Additionally, all outstanding travel expense reports, credit card reports, original invoices (no faxed copies), supporting purchase orders/purchase permits, or account adjustments should be sent to OFS by June 10 to be included in FY 10-11 budget. Items for deposit that were in Luther's possession by May 31 should be brought to OFS immediately. Thank you for helping OFS close the year in a timely manner.

Center Stage Series tickets available

Center Stage Series will bring 10 outstanding performances to the stage for the 2011-12 season. 

Tickets for Center Stage Series events may be purchased as a subscription package now through Aug. 26 at the Box Office.

Meet the authors

More than 15 authors affiliated with the Norwegian American Historical Association's Norway 2011 conference, held on the Luther campus, will sign copies of their books Wednesday, June 15 from 2:15-3 p.m. in the Williams Lounge, Dahl Centennial Union. Books range in topics from history to fiction, humor and bilingual publications. Books are available for purchase in the Book Shop. Open to the public with no charge for admission.

Aquatic Center showcase event June 16

Luther will host a special event on campus Thursday, June 16, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. to showcase the plans for the college's aquatic center. 

Luther is raising funds to construct a new aquatic center as part of the college's Sesquicentennial Fund, a five-year, $50 million funding initiative in conjunction with Luther’s 150th anniversary celebration in 2011.

Mark Z. Muggli has been selected to serve as the director for the Associated Colleges of the Midwest London program for spring 2013. Muggli will direct the London portion of the ACM London and Florence program. During the London portion, students will focus on the theatre, literature and the history displayed in contemporary London. 

Muggli was recently named the Jones Distinguished Teaching Professor. The professorship is awarded to a Luther faculty member who honors the values and traditions of the humanities, engages significant issues in a humanities discipline, demonstrates the ability to nurture the intellectual life of students and provides academic leadership in the humanities. His professorship project will seek "to break through the clichés about Shakespeare and reconnect with the wide-ranging impact of his work."

Jacquelyn Wright will be inducted Aug. 27 into the University of Northern Iowa's School of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services Hall of Excellence. In honor of the award, a metal etching will be hung in the Hall of Excellence at the University of Northern Iowa in Wright's likeness.

David Njus and students Andrew Tjossem '13, Brian Hannegan Mckee '11 and Holly Godar '13 presented a research paper titled "Adult Attachment and Mate-Seeking Preferences" at the May 2011 annual meeting of the Midwestern Psychological Association.

Grice receives Young Alumni Award

Elizabeth Grice '01, post-doctoral fellow at the National Human Genome Research Institute, was named the recipient of the Luther College Young Alumni Award for 2011 at the college’s Commencement ceremonies on Sunday, May 22. The Young Alumni Award recognizes Luther alumni who have graduated in the past 10 years and who have rendered notable service to their profession and society in their vocation or avocation.

Wendy Jaycox Davidson named Regent

Luther College President Richard Torgerson has announced the appointment of Wendy Jaycox Davidson of Reisterstown, Md. to the Luther Board of Regents. Davidson will assume her duties as a Luther Regent at the board's October meeting.

Davidson serves as vice president and general manager of consumer food manufacturing in the U.S. and Latin American region for McCormick & Co.

Alison Dwyer, who is married to Philip Freeman in Classics, is starting approximately 26 weeks of chemotherapy and radiation as follow up to successful initial surgery and treatment. Research participants needed

A Luther research team is exploring how family relationships are affected by the death of a sibling due to suicide. The purpose of this project is to help families that may face such a loss in the future. Participation involves a telephone interview. To qualify for this research, you have to have lost a sibling to suicide and were in touch with at least one parent before the loss. Contact Kim Powell, <powellki> if willing to participate or with questions. You will receive a check for $25 for your assistance with this research.
