Theatre/Dance

Though dance and theatre are two distinct art forms, they are closely linked at Luther. Faculty and students bring together theatre and dance to emphasize a whole-person approach to becoming an informed artist, encouraging the education and development of capable, passionate, and accountable leaders in the arts, and empowering and enlivening the creative imagination in all people.

A theatre/dance major at Luther can shape an individual course of study in response to a particular area of interest, whether it be theatre, dance, or design/technical work. In response to student and faculty interest, the department offers special topics and seminars to supplement core classes. Topics have included "Mask and the Actor," "Musical Theatre/Dance," "Play Writing," and "Yoga."

Other opportunities for students include workshops with guest artists, participation in regional and national conferences and festivals, and attendance at off-campus performances and workshops. To further their exploration of dance and theatre, students majoring in the department are required to participate in the on-going work of the department and encouraged to plan and carry out independent creative projects, workshop productions, and internships. Students can apply to SPIN theatre, Luther's student-run theatre, to produce theatre and dance works and workshop productions.

An arts management program is also available in which students choose from two programs with concentrations in theatre/dance or in management.

Opportunities for the Nonmajor

Theatre/dance classes and productions are open to all students regardless of major, and provide all students opportunities to become intensely involved in the creative worlds of theatre and dance. Majors from diverse areas such as biology, music, anthropology, English, psychology, and education are often found in the classroom and rehearsal room along with majors and minors. Every student has the opportunity to experience and explore the distinct demands of creating theatre and dance and find connection to their major area of study and the larger liberal arts curriculum.

Performance and Production Opportunities

Auditions and technical interviews are held each semester for various dance and theatre performances, which provide excellent experience for beginning through advanced students. Performance opportunities include productions choreographed and directed by faculty and guest artists, student-led workshops, class showings, and seminars.
