The Luther Gardens Program is seeking six summer gardeners.  Do you enjoy planting, weeding, harvesting and other outdoor projects?  Have you always wanted to learn more about edible landscaping?  Do you want to gain experience with seasonal extension and innovative growing techniques?  Are community gardens your thing?  Perhaps you're craving a deeper connection to your food.  The Luther Gardens continue to expand in size and capacity and provide a unique way for you to learn about food production, food safety standards and creative growing techniques, all the while producing healthy, fresh local food for the college cafeteria. 

The expectation is that the majority of summer gardeners will continue working in the gardens through the fall as that is a main harvest time.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Working from 7am or 8am until Noon Monday-Friday and the occasional weekend
  • Tending to plants in the greenhouse and hoophouse
  • Preparing beds using broadfork and a small tiller
  • Planting, weeding, harvesting and processing produce
  • Adhering to strict food safety protocol when working in the gardens
  • Coordinating with dining services on invoicing and delivering
  • Maintaining the community gardens (mowing pathways, string trimming the perimeter)
  • Taking care of equipment and tools
  • Maintaining accurate records of work (planting, weeding, harvest dates)
  • Planting and maintaining edible landscapes on central campus
  • Coordinating with grounds and other facilities staff on projects as needed
  • Fencing
  • Other projects as assigned

Qualifications

  • Enrollment at Luther College
  • Valid driver’s license preferred
  • Physically able to perform duties required
  • Interest in food production
  • Ability to carry up to 40 pounds
  • Team-minded orientation
  • Positive attitude
  • Ability to work in extreme heat and perform physical labor
