On June 21, the summer solstice-the day with the most hours of daylight in the year, Luther College will host a public tour of its renewable energy facilities. The tour is part of the "Solar Works for Iowa" campaign, which is promoting similar events in communities across the state to discuss the potential for solar energy to heat and power Iowans' homes, businesses and farms.
The "Solar Works for Iowa" campaign highlights Governor Terry Branstad recently signing legislation that triples the size of Iowa's successful solar energy tax credit program and makes additional improvements to it. Iowa's program is linked to two federal tax credit programs. When used together these tax credits can almost cut in half the cost of a solar water heating or solar photovoltaic electric system.
The public is invited to learn more about solar power by joining the tour, hosted by Luther College's Center for Sustainable Communities. Luther staff will pick up interested persons at the Decorah Farmers' Market, on the southeast corner of River and Heivly Streets, at 11 a.m. and then drive via Luther vans for a tour of Luther's renewable energy projects. The tour will conclude by 12:30 p.m. with a drop-off back at the Farmers' Market.
What to expect:
· Visit Luther's 280-kilowatt (kW) solar array, the biggest in the state of Iowa
· Visit Luther's 1,600-kW wind turbine and step inside the tower
· Learn about Luther's greenhouse gas reduction goals and plans
