The Luther Community Garden was established in 2009 and has been growing in size and popularity ever since. If you are a Luther faculty, staff or student...come grow with us! The Community Garden offers a great way to learn more about gardening and put green thumbs to work in creating beautiful and bountiful harvests that can be enjoyed throughout the Summer and well into the Fall and Winter.
2014 Season Details and Logistics

- May 1st - Plot request form and payment are due
- June 1st - All plots must be planted by this date unless prior arrangements have been made
- Fall - You are required to clean-up your plot at the end of the season. Stay tuned for more details about when and how.
Free Gardening Classes! This year you will have the opportunity to participate in all or part of a 10 class gardening series, which runs from February through October. Local gardening experts and enthusiasts will guide participants through a range of gardening topics. Classes are free for all community gardeners. Sign-up is required. More info.
Plot Sizes: Three sizes of community garden plots are available. The full plot will be approximately 20'x20', half plots will measure 20'x10' and student plots will be 10'x10'. Students are strongly encouraged to share a student plot with 2 or more students.
Fees: Full plot= $30 / Half plot= $20 / Student plot = $10. Cash/check (made out to Luther Community Gardens) should be delivered to Maren Stumme-Diers in the Sustainability Office before May 1, 2014. Keep in mind that these fees do not entirely cover the full cost of what it takes to run the community garden program. Your fees will be used for community garden improvement projects (ie fencing), events and supplies.
Tilling: Sometimes we offer a few early plots to gardeners wishing to get in early crops like spinach and peas. The sign-up form allows you to indicate whether you are interested in getting in the garden early (mid-April?) just in case early gardening becomes a possibility. As with previous years, we will make plots available the third week of May.
Planting deadline: All plots need to be planted by June 1, 2014 or they will be tilled under and planted by the Luther Gardeners.
Paths: We ask that community gardeners help maintain the pathways surrounding their plots. Student gardeners may assist with this by lining the main pathways of the garden with mulch.
Gates: It is very important to always close gates behind you when entering or leaving the garden to keep critters out.
Tools: There are a few tools provided to gardeners. You may need to bring some of your own.
Community Garden Committee: Seeking dedicated community gardeners to help coordinate Saturday weeding parties, community garden potlucks and other social gatherings and generally to help make decisions about the community garden. Please indicate interest via the plot request form.
Mentor Program: This year we will be offering a "garden mentor" program as a way for experienced gardeners to pair up with less experienced gardeners. Commitments will be minimal but this is a neat way for everyone to share information and will hopefully lead to a successful season for everyone involved.
