Sustainability Film Series

The word "Sustainability" is one that is often misused and misinterpreted.  It is the buzzword in the rhetoric surrounding the "Green" movement and has primarily been implemented in environmental concerns groups and organizations on college campuses.  The idea of sustainability, however, is much bigger- it acts on individual, community, and planetary levels.

Even with this knowledge, how can we achieve a societal model that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs?  Let's find out together!

Luther College Sustainability is presenting a film series that illustrates an approach to understanding "sustainability" in three award winning documentaries over the course of three weeks.  Here is the line up:

The Listening Project7pm, March 3rd
HOME
7pm, March 10th
The 11th Hour
- 7pm, March 17th

All documentaries will be shown in Olin 102- the first three Wednesdays in the month of March.

The Listening Project

As Americans, we have an incredible impact on the rest of the world and we need to understand our position in it before we can start trying to change the way our civilization has come to operate in an unsustainable manner.  The Listening Project travels to 15 countries, speaking with ordinary people about their view of America. Collectively, the messengers suggest that Americans learn, listen and question.  This documentary presents an incredibly unique human tapestry of views, opinions, and perceptions about the United States. If we wish to approach a global model of sustainability, then we should take advice from our international brothers and sisters and start listening.

HOME

"Sustainability" isn't just a 'being green".  Sustainability is a critically important concept that is important for the entirety of humanity.   It is about meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.  The documentary HOME presents the evolution of the Earth, nature, agriculture, humans, and the crises of habitat destruction, energy depletion, climate disruption, degredation of the environment, health, economic disparity and more.  If we're looking for a source by which to understand our planet and the damage done to it by modern humanity we need to look no further than HOME.  The second step towards a Sustainable future involves learning.

The 11th hour

The very nature of sustainability is action.  We must innovate, create, and synthesize new ways of doing things in order to form sustainable life patterns and habits. The 11th hour shows that if we don't change our habits, the very future of humanity will be in Jeopardy.  In many ways this documentary is an inspirational call to action- the third step towards a Sustainable future.
