Compete To Reduce Top Image

February 25 - March 15 2013

Reduce your energy and water use.  Compete on behalf of your hall to win the competition, and compete on behalf of your school against over 200 other colleges and universities!

Join us for our Kick-Off Event!:
Kick-Off Event:
The Last Carnival on Earth
What:
A zombie-themed event with carnival games, relays, zombie face painting, crafts, food, and prizes.
Where:
SRC (The Sports and Recreation Center--Regents Center)
When:
Saturday, February 23rd, 6-8pm

2013 Competition Theme:
This year, Luther’s Energy Competition will take on a darker theme.  In the event of a zombie apocalypse, will you be prepared?  Zombie hordes will destroy power lines and power plants.  Water will be infected with the zombie virus.  Supply lines will be cut off due to the danger of zombie attacks.  The only way  to prepare yourself in the event of a zombie apocalypse is to participate in the annual energy competition--Learn how to conserve energy; learn how to conserve water; learn more about sustainable behaviors!

Incentives/Prizes:

  • $500 to Residence Hall who conserves the most electricity (kWh) and water (gallons) combined.
  • $200 to Residence Hall who comes in second in electricity (kWh) and water (gallons) conservation.
    • The Hall Director or Hall Council will select a few ways for the money to be used to purchase something for the hall, or host an event that residents can attend (pizza party, ice cream social, Foos Ball table).  The residents may then vote to decide how to spend the money.
  • $10 Gift Cards to local Decorah businesses awarded to one eligible student from each residence hall each week of the competition through a drawing.

How to be eligible for weekly drawings:

  • Participate in your residence hall’s Black-Out Event of the week
    • Turn the Lights Out on Energy Waste.  Throughout the Energy Competition there will be weekly Black-Out Events happening all over campus.  Turn out the lights, unplug electric devices, and attend these events to help your hall reduce its electrical consumption and win the competition!
    • You may participate in other halls’ Black-Out Events, but you are only eligible for the prize drawing by participating in your hall’s event.
    • Sign up to get emails for blackout events
  • Participate in a Dorm Room Energy Audit
    • Or get a friend to participate in a Dorm Room Energy Audit (applicable for week 2 and 3 of competition).  Your friend must indicate your name when they sign up.
    • A Sustainability Rep will conduct a brief Energy Audit which address three main areas of resource conservation: electricity, water, and recycling/waste.  Key topics will include:
      • Sign the Energy Conservation Pledge
      • Use power strips
      • Unplug electronics when not in use
      • Turn out lights when not in room/use natural lighting
      • Replace incandescent bulbs with more efficient CFL bulbs
      • Trash and recycling receptacles in room
      • Use reusable utensils, cups, water bottles whenever possible
      • Turn off water when not using it (brushing teeth, washing hands & face, etc.)
      • Do fewer loads of laundry, wash with cold water, air dry clothes when possible
      • Try to take shorter showers (5 min or less)
    • Sign-up for a Dorm Room Energy Audit

How to check for competition updates:

  • Using Lucid’s Building Dashboard ®, students, faculty, staff, and community members will be able to see real-time electricity consumption and weekly water usage for each building on campus, allowing students to instantly compare performance, share winning strategies and track standings among the leading buildings.
  • To make Building Dashboard more accessible, it will be set as the default homepage screen on the following computers across campus: Residence hall computers, Valders computer labs, Main computer lab, Public Access computers in Dahl Centennial Union
  • Updates will also be posted:
    • In Residence Halls
    • Outside of the Student Organization Suite
    • On the Sustainability Bulletin Board in the Union
