Residents in each hall are responsible for bringing collected cardboard, paper, plastic, metal, and redeemables ($.05 deposit glass, plastic, and aluminum) to the collection center for their floor or building. This will be collected by the recycling crew up to three times each week.
Luther does not provide recycling containers for individual rooms. If you didn't bring one from home, or don't have an extra garbage can to dedicate for recycling, no big deal. The easiest thing to do is take an old cardboard box to collect all your recycling (we can help you find a box if you can't). Once a week, take the box to your hall collection center and sort contents into the proper containers. Need a sign to make it clear to visitors of your room that the box is dedicated to recycling? Download one here.
As of May 2015, a grant from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources allowed the Center for Sustainable Communities to purchase seven roll-off recycling bins as a substantial step towards a more refined and effective recycling program. Each blue recycling bin has been placed next to each residence hall, and it is highly encouraged that students, faculty, and staff use them for all recyclable items. The bins have recycling compartments for cardboard, paper, plastics #1-7, and metals. Read more about the grant and plans for implementation here.
