2009-10 Programs

Immersion Programs: August 24-August 28: 50 incoming first-year students joined faculty/staff for a week-long bonding experience. The program choices were the Boundary Waters, canoeing along the Upper Iowa, hiking along the North Shore or biking the Great River Bike Ride.

Orientation Welcome Party: August 29: First-year students got acquainted with one another and returning students at an outside contra dance party which included free pizza and the moo-mobile from 8-11 p.m.

Service Project: September 6: 80 percent of the first-year students learned about service as they spent the afternoon cleaning bricks from the demolished East Side Elementary School. In the past two years, Luther students have cleaned approximately 40 pallets of bricks, which equals 60 tons! These 12,000 bricks have been used in various projects and the latest bricks will be used in the new courtyard in the newly renovated Valders Hall of Science.

Blood Drive: September 22nd: Brunsdale Lounge from 10am-4pm. Co-sponsored by APO and wellness.

Stress Less Day: October 7, 10:00am-1:00pm: Wellness and Active Minds will set up booths to help you cope with stress. Massages, stress balls and much, much more!

Speaker: Mark Fenton: October 7th. 7:30 in CFL. Mr. Fenton is the national spokeman for walkable communities. He will be also speaking to the Fit & Well classes and assessing Luther's roads on campus, walking between buildings and how to improve those areas.

Adventure Race: October 10: This year's adventure race will consist of a 2-mile canoe/kayak, 10-mile bike ride, and 3-mile run, beginning at 10 a.m. The race can be completed as an individual or as a team. Fee: $15 for students/$20 for non-Luther students. Entry form may be found on the side bullet, (85 participants this year)

"You Booze, You Lose" event: October 28-29, 2009: Students are encouraged to move around the alcohol circuit which will include the drink car (interactive program), video with students involved with AA, Decorah Police with their sobriety test and vision goggles, the alcohol study involving Luther students, the alcohol policy in the Residence Halls, posters and life experiences by Luther students.

 Root Beer Pong -  November 11: The event will be held on the Wellness Floors in Brandt Hall to educate students about drinking issues, and the facts and statistics about drinking on campus.

Thanksgiving Dinner - November 21: A combined thanksgiving dinner between the residents of 3rd Miller and 8th Miller. The floors will be making a healthy dinner together and discuss healthy holiday eating habits.

Rock Climbing at the Wall - December 8: The Wellness Floors will head to the Legends Fitness Center for an evening of climbing the 30 ft. wall.

Oscar's Cafe -  December 11: An all-hall program for the residents of Olson Hall. Students create a coffee house atmosphere in the second story lounge with healthy snacks. A relaxing place to study and relax the night before finals begin.

Monday Movie Nights - Month of January: A movie and game night each Monday night of J-term where the wellness floor residents can gather to socialize with  healthy snacks and great company.

Bible study:  Month of January - Wednesday nights: Join some of the residents of the wellness floors and study the Bible.

Banana Grams - January 16: Wellness floor residents will gather to play the game of Banana Grams and have a "big hair" contest.

Luther Olympiad:January 15: Open to all first year students. Approximately 75 students came for several hours and played games of dodgeball, volleyball, kickball, lightning as well as board games and mind games. There was a unique obstacle course during the evening as well where students had to solve mind puzzles and perform activities of finesse to complete the course.

BOMB: January 23, 2010: 8:00-11:00pm in Marty's CyberCafe. Twenty three groups performed with the top winner taking home $300. The first place group was an acapella men's group, second place honors went to a traditional Irish/Celtic dance group and third place went to an instrumental/vocal group. Attendance was huge with a packed house. Campus dance groups such as Eklipse, Orchesis and HipHop were crowd pleasers as well. Spring Break Bags: March 26, 2010: Groups traveling for spring break will be given spring break bags with small reminders in them such as sunscreen and chapstick.

Biggest Loser Contest: April 1st, 2010: Staff and students will compete to lose weight in this four-month program of weekly weigh-ins and challenges. The competition will come to a close on August 9th but the official winners won't be decided until 10-10-10 as competitors learn to manage and lose on their own for two months.

Believe to Achieve Half Marathon: April 11, 2010: This 13.1 mile race is open only to folks that have never competed in anything more than a 5K race. This race is for those new exercisers or veteran exercisers to challenge themselves 'outside' the box. No entry fee but a "finishers fee" for bragging rights. All proceeds will go to "No Veteran Left Behind" organization which helps outstanding college debts to our veterans. (34 participants - will host again next year)

Biggest Luther Loser: April 9th - October 10, 2010: Team up in pairs to lose the weight you have been wanting to lose. Weekly weigh-in's from April 9th to June 11 and then on your own to continue the weight loss journey until school starts. At that time, if you need some extra motivation, you can join the "10 in 10" program for the final weigh-in on October 10, 2010. Challenges along the way may include: drinking 2-4 Naelgene bottles of water a day, EVERYONE losing one pound for a catered lunch (if someone doesn't lose, NO ONE gets lunch, ping pong drawing and more! Open to staff and students.

Town Hall Meeting: April 26, 2010 at 6:30pm. Representatives from Helping Services of Northeast Iowa Substance Abuse Prevention, Decorah Police Dept, Winneshiek County Attorney's Office, Northeast Iowa Behavioral Health Substance Abuse Treatment and Luther Wellness will discuss underage drinking. A second public meeting will be held at 7:30pm, on creating a city ordinance requiring bartenders to take a Beverage Server Training Course.

Fish Fry: April 23, 2010: Enjoy your Friday night meal out on the library lawn with an actual fish fry! Side dishes, desserts and fresh fried fish to treat your taste buds on this spring evening.

 Cool-Aid: May 15, 2010: Enjoy some refreshments and entertainment while taking a study break during "reading day 2010". Location will be the Library Lawn, starting at 10:00am.

Senior Send-Off: May 20, 2010: All seniors are invited to join an evening of fun at Hotel Winneshiek as the Luther community wishes them well in the next chapters of their lives.
