Traditional cultures have always known that group singing has a power unlike any other to bind people together. There is an ancient African concept, ubuntu, which speaks of our inter-connectedness and interdependence. It means “I am because we are.” What defines us as individuals is achieved through our relationship with others. Nowhere is this more evident than in singing together— a great place to learn and practice ubuntu spirit.

In today’s North American society, music has become largely commercially oriented toward performance by the few for the many. Many people who loved singing as children haven’t sung since. Others were designated “non-singers” by thoughtless adults and have carried this musical wounding all their lives. Yet people are rediscovering that singing is everybody’s birthright, and holds a key for the healing of the world.

Singing can deepen our sense of communion with each other and our sacred respect and wonder in the face of all nature. By singing easy-to-learn, playfully challenging songs that speak to critical themes—environmental, social, interpersonal—people experience joy, a sense of success, and an expression of shared meaning.

Everyone can do this! Come share in the joy of singing together in an environment that is supportive, safe, and fun. Just bring your ears, your heart, and your mouth and you will be ready!
