This Month's Spotlight Goes To...
Forensics Speech & Debate!!

The mission of the Luther College Forensic Speech and Debate team is to instill the importance of communicative discipline in all facets of life. Our philosophy is to emphasize the importance of setting and achieving goals, developing leadership skills, and creating a strong team camaraderie.

I am most proud the amount of success or team has had this year!  We have had people place at many tournaments! Last year, my debate partner was studying abroad, so I debated with a then first-year Sarah Sturm. She was nervous to the point of paralysis when it came to debate, but she improved astronomically throughout the season. At the very end, her and I placed 2nd in Parliamentary Debate at nationals, and seeing her progress from the beginning of that semester to the very end was an incredible journey. I have never seen anyone progress in such a short period of time so rapidly. I cannot fully articulate just how remarkable her transformation was.

My favorite event last year was our national tournament at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL. Our team placed 4th overall in Division 1, and everyone was so excited and happy! To see everyone's absolute amazement when this was announced makes all of the hard work worth it. The national team put hours of preparation into their acting pieces, platform speeches, extemporaneous practice, and Parliamentary Debate practices, and all of the hard-work and dedication really paid of at this tournament. Our team is very different to other schools in that we are student-run, which is remarkably rare. Student-run teams don't usually achieve this type of success, so when professors from around the country were approaching Luther students to congratulate them on their successes, it was absolutely incredible.

If I had to describe Forensics in three words they would be enthusiastic, talented, and articulate!!

To be involved in Speech and Debate join as at practice! We meet every Tuesday at 6:45 in the Mott room or contact one of our newly elected officers:
