"Behind Happy Faces" - Talking About Mental Health, a presentation by Ross Szabo. Mr. Szabo is a social pioneer who has led the youth mental health movement. He’s an expert at creating sustainable mental health curriculum and programs that reach large audiences. His presentations and the speakers he has trained have inspired millions of people to address their mental health.
His passion for mental health comes from personal experience. He visited his oldest brother in the psychiatric ward of the University of Pennsylvania Hospital when he was 11. At age 16, Ross was diagnosed with bipolar disorder with anger control problems and psychotic features. In his senior year of high school he was hospitalized for attempting to take his own life and later that year had to take a leave of absence from American University due to a relapse with bipolar disorder. He returned to American 4 years later and graduated with a B.A. in psychology. Mr. Szabo started sharing his story with bipolar disorder to help others think about their lives when he was 17.
