Active Participation Opportunities
First implemented in 1996, the evolving wellness floor program encourages residents to support each other in meeting goals based on various dimensions of wellness.
As the program has matured, residents have been instrumental in creating activities that have defined the floors. Part of residents' wellness floor contract is a pledge to be active participants in floor activities, including those listed below.
Fun(d) Run
Started in 2001, the Fun(d) Run is a cross-country run event that donates its proceeds to a local charity, determined each year. In 2001, proceeds were donated to construct a handicap accessible playground in the Decorah community. Typically held in October, the event takes place on a Saturday afternoon, and residents may participate in all levels of organization of the event, as well as run in it if they choose. Prizes are awaded for various achievements.
Great Stationary Bike Race
Started in 1999, the Great Stationary Bike Race is another charity event that residents may have a hand in organizing. Participants collect pledges, and a team takes 1/2 hour shifts riding a stationary bike as many miles as possible. This event is typically held in late February.
Relay For Life
Relay for Life is a 24-hour walk/run-a-thon that gives proceeds to breast cancer awareness and research. Wellness floor residents typically form a few teams, taking 1-hour shifts walking on the outdoor track at Luther College. The event goes through the night, and those 3 a.m. shifts can be (surprisingly) quite a blast!
