Multicultural Student Assistant Position (10 hours)
Objectives
- To increase the number and quality of contacts with new American students of color as part of the center’s overall retention initiative.
- To help new students get connected and involved with the Center and the various resources on the campus
- To provide general office support
Main Responsibilities
Peer counseling/advising
- Connect students to the appropriate referral resources that may meet their academic and personal needs.
- Be available and willing to listen to new student concerns and be able to advise appropriately.
- Inform the Director of Student Services of the students’ problems and concerns that are likely to impact their success and retention.
Retention/Development
- Help new students become familiar with the college -- its personnel, regulations, history and customs.
- Ensure that students are informed about the events that are planned for them and encourage them to participate.
- Visit with each student at least twice during the first month and at once per month during the first semester & follow up with email, phone or visit to find out well they are adjusting.
- Share the driving responsibilities to get students around town and to appointments
- Plan at least 2 activities each semester that help the students to get to know each other.
- Plan joint fun activities with ISA to encourage the students to get to know the international students.
Administrative
- Perform office duties – answer phone, check email, filing, display board, poster distribution on and off campus.
- Keep a record of student contacts – who, when, service provided.
- Recognize student birthdays and other significant events.
- Make presentations to prospective students and other visitors.
- Assist with planning of Kwanzaa, the annual Ethnic Arts festival, heritage and other diversity events.
- Work in the office 5 hours weekly especially during the spring semester.
- Attend meetings with LDC staff/supervisor
Requirements
- Member of at least the sophomore class
- Knowledgeable about the college’ personnel, regulations, customs & referral resources
- Possess a level of cultural competence that makes you comfortable with initiating and maintaining contact with new and other American students of color.
- Be a Luther certified driver
- Good oral, written and organizational skills
- Live in the residence halls
- Ability to work as part of the team
