      Tutoring Reminders

Tutoring requests for spring semester will be accepted after January 3, 2012.

Please be aware that tutoring is a commitment, and you will be expected to meet with your tutor on a regular basis.  Many tutors lose work-study hours due to students not showing up, or deciding they don't need help after a few weeks.  Tutors are a great resource, but if you request a one, please be prepared to stay in contact and attend the scheduled sessions.   Read more...

TRIO Funding Was in Danger, But Your Advocacy Helped!

In November, several students participated in an advocacy effort to promote awareness of how Student Support Services has impacted their college experience (and life) in order to help save funding at the federal level. We thank everyone who participated by signing a petition or emailing their senators/representatives, which you can still do through this Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) link.

You can also “like” the COE on Facebook to receive regular updates about TRIO funding.  Join the SSS Facebook group to see previous links to COE.

SSS alumni are getting in on the fight to save funding as well.  Before Thanksgiving, we contacted over 200 graduates, many of whom responded by emailing their state politicians to let them know how SSS has impacted their lives.

In early December, we responded to an urgent email requesting more detailed information from our alumni to be included with an open letter “to the Congressional Delegations from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio and Wisconsin to take a stand and fight to preserve the federal TRIO programs.”

Several former SSS participants responded with their current location, career path, and statements persuasively explaining how SSS enabled them to achieve their goals.  This information has been forwarded to the above-listed delegations who will hopefully choose to respond by maintaining TRIO funding.

    • Finals Pizza Party 2011

Kick Off to Finals Pizza Party

A “funtastic” group of 55 students enjoyed pizza, cake and games with SSS on December 9th.  In addition to several battle of the sexes games, general silliness and humor, a wide variety of door prizes were handed out.

Katie Peterson won $50 Decorah Chamber of Commerce Dollars in a random drawing of the three First Year students who completed their campus passport.

Cindy San can slide around with her “Sled-o-ramma” door prize, while Tony Dischinger can become entangled with his “Game Night” door prize (Twister).  Stacy Hopson can buy online with her door prize, “iApps for you,” while Ryan Fugleberg can relax with National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation for his door prize.

Six other students won bags of treats for correctly answering SSS and Luther College trivia questions.
