Scott Fjelstul '83

Head men's golf coach

Hometown story: Grew up in Decorah, led the Norse golf team while a student at Luther, and has coached men's golf at his alma mater for over 20 years.

Community commitment: Represents the fourth generation to own and operate Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah.

Scott never tires of talking about Luther. "The college is a passion of mine," the management grad says. "It's given me lots of opportunities that I want others to know about."

Therefore, talking with prospective student-athletes for his 12-man team is a pleasure. "Recruiting is about relationships," he says. "Luther is people. The passion people have for the school, community, and area makes it a great place to live and choose your career direction."

At the helm of the Norse men's team, Scott maps out challenging practices and five tournaments in the fall, along with a winter training program. The team's first activity each spring is a trip to play the courses near Orlando, Florida, prior to the regular IIAC season.

"I like playing the best courses against the best competition all over the Midwest," Scott explains. "We're lucky we live in a great golf area. We have nice courses available for practice, and we have a team that always feels like family. Can you tell I love coaching?"
