Like most incoming students, Mike chose Luther for its welcoming nature. He also likes the personality of the football program, which he calls "eager to succeed."

Having spent a career in coaching, most recently at the University of Wisconsin--La Crosse, as well as in private business, Mike appreciates well-roundedness in both his athletes and the campus community.

"The goal is to have best total football program in the conference--which means we offer ways for our players to develop both on and off the field, including their academics and general character. You can't do that without having strong programs all over campus."

Mike wears this commitment on his sleeve--well, on his wrist, literally, in the inscription "212" on a Luther-blue wristband. He gave each of his players one of the simple bands to inspire forward momentum.

"It takes 212 degrees to change water into steam, and you need steam to run an engine," he explains. "You have to strive to be 1-0 every day in every way to hit 212 degrees--in the classroom, in relationships, and within yourself."
