The Luther women’s tennis team opened its 2012-13 campaign with an impressive showing against Upper Iowa University, an NCAA Division II foe, dispatching the Peacocks by a 7-2 here at home. The Norse gained an early 2-1 edge in doubles and rode that momentum en route to winning five of the six singles matches.
Elise Allen and Maggie Helms earned a break of serve in the second game to go up to 2-0 and kept rolling throughout the match, scoring an (8-2) victory over Angie Alba and Mikinzee Salo at No. 2 doubles, giving the Norse a 1-0 lead. Katy Lindstrom and Annie Whiteley also flew out of the gates quickly at No. 3, leading 6-1 before a Peacock rally saw the lead trimmed to 6-4. Lindstrom nailed down a key hold and the duo tallied a break of serve in the final game to secure the (8-4) win against Nicole Pothen and Paige Olson.
Cassandra Chalhoub and Lola White-Baer traded breaks with Upper Iowa’s Amanda Nunez and Karli Loewecke, ranked No. 5 in the final NCAA DII Central Region Poll last season, early in the match and were at 2-2 before the Peacocks went on a three game run to grab a 5-2 advantage. Chalhoub and White-Baer hung in to the very end, but dropped an (8-4) decision at No. 1, making it a 2-1 lead for Luther heading into singles action.
Lindstrom continued her strong play in singles, where she fought off a charge from Salo in the second set for a (6-2, 6-3) win at No. 4. A (6-0, 6-3) win from Adriana DePaolis at No. 6 over Pothen brought the score to 4-1 and Helms came through in her Norse debut by serving out a pair of tightly contested sets, defeating Olson (7-5, 6-4) to clinch the season opening win for Luther.
Chalhoub performed admirably at No. 1 against Nunez, ranked No. 5 in the final NCAA DII Central Region Poll last season, before falling (6-3, 6-4). White-Baer and Allen notched the last two points for the Norse to account for the final margin. White-Baer gutted out a tight first set and won (6-4, 6-2) over Alba at No. 3. Allen was the last one on the courts, outlasting Loewecke (7-6 (4), 7-6 (5)) in a well played match at No. 2. Allen rallied in the second set tie-breaker by winning the last six points to earn the win over the No. 15 ranked player in the final NCAA D2 Central Region Poll last season.
